The Australian Connection - Uncle Ned

Right, let's get this out of the way here and forget about it. Every document I have seen giving Ned's full name has it as Edward. His father was Edmund, his son was Edmund, Uncle Ned in Carrigeen was Edmond but Australian Uncle Ned was a godfather, married and died as Edward. Hereinafter I'll stick to Ned.

Ned Dunne was born about 1859 in Co. Tipperary, Ireland to Edmund Dunne, Carpenter, and Margaret Tobin. He emigrated sometime before 1884.

Mary Louisa Gobbi was born about 1862 in Oakleigh (now a suburb of Melbourne) to Attilio Gobbi, Market Gardener, and Mary Deschant. She appears to have had a brother John whose son J.C.Gobbi visited Lena in 1918. St Alipius Church

They married on May 14, 1884 in St Alipius Church (right), Oakleigh. The witnesses were Patrick James Daly and Mary ? Louisa Daly.

They had five children that I know of -

Uncle Ned died on May 25, 1928 (aged 69) and Mary Louisa in June 1940 (aged 79).

"This is the train which I was in charge of
when I retired from the Railway Department
which ran between Melbourne & Sydney.
I came by it the other day when looking
through some of my papers. It is here shown
approaching Melbourne. You can see me at
the door looking back as we were rounding the bend.
As I'm now far away from you,
if you look at this old train
perhaps it will sometimes remind you of this

Joseph Clare Gobbi

135 According to his "Soldier's Papers",
Joseph Clare Gobbi was son of
John Gobbi of Clayton, VIC,
which is very close to Oakleigh.
John might be a brother of Mary Louisa.

I associate this with Mr Gobbi as he was a Signaller
whereas Herbert was a Gunner.
