The Family of Elizabeth Hayes & Thomas Keegan, 1873

Thomas Keegan was born about 1849 to Mary Early ( - ) and James Keegan, Farmer ( - before 1873).

Elizabeth Hayes was born about 1853 in Shettleston to Ellen Hooks (c1832 - 1902) and James Hayes, Coal Miner (c1830 - 1871). [See Section HS-5-1 for family background.]


1873 James Keegan (Illegitimate) was born at 2h0m a.m. on Monday, November 24 at ?? Eastmuir Street to Elizabeth Hay, Steam Loom Weaver and Thomas Keegan, Pitheadman. His birth was registered No.253 at Shettleston on December 3 by Elizabeth Hay, "her X mark", Mother and Thomas Keegan, Father.

There is a correction in the Register of Corrected Entries for the District of Shettleston in the County of Lanark, Volume 1, Page 81, to the following effect —

In the second column of Entry No.253 in the Register Book of Births for the year 1873, for November Twentyfourth, substitute November Seventeenth.

The above Correction is made under the direction and by the written authority of the Sheriff in consequence of the depositions dated December 13,, 1873 of Elizabeth Hay and Thomas Keegan, Informants of the Birth to which the said Entry relates.

1873 On Monday, November 24, Thomas Keegan and Elizabeth Hay were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.76 at Shettleston on November 26.

Thomas was a Bachelor, gave his age as 24, occupation Pitheadman and usual residence Woodlands, Old Monkland Parish. His parents are recorded as James Keegan, Farmer (deceased) and Mary Keegan m.s. Early.

Elizabeth was a Spinster, gave her age as 20, occupation Steamloom Weaver and usual residence Eastmuir, Shettleston Parish. Her parents are recorded as James Hay, Coal Miner (deceased) and Helen Hay m.s. Crooks [sic].

The celebrant was G. McBrearty, Cath. Clergyman and the witnesses were James McConville and Mary Jane McAleer.

Elizabeth and Mary Jane made their marks, Thomas and James signed.

1881 April 3 The family were living at 26 Eastfield Place, Inchbelly Road, in a house with one windowed room. [I would consider this to be in Springburn though it is enumerated in Dennistoun District.]

[Balgrayhill Road, Springburn was formerly known as the Inchbelly Turnpike Road. There were workers houses there associated with the Caledonian Railway Works. Inchbelly Crossing was the official name for the bridge at the Caley. It was on the site of the Glasgow Garnkirk Railway, Scotlands first passenger railway.]

Helen Hayes was born on Saturday, November 10, 1855 at Eastmuir, Shettleston to Ellen Hooks (c1832 - 1902) and James Hayes, Coal Miner (c1830 - 1871). [See Section HS-5-1 for family background.]


1873 On Thursday, October 2, James Owens and Ellen Haye were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.64 at Shettleston on October 4.

James was a Bachelor, gave his age as 19, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Baillieston, Old Monkland Parish. His parents are recorded as Henry Owens, Coal Miner and Catherine Owens m.s. Hilon.

Ellen was a Spinster, age 17, occupation Steamloom Weaver and usual residence Eastmuir, Shettleston Parish. Her parents are recorded as James Haye, Coal Miner (deceased) and Helen Haye m.s. Hooks.

The celebrant was G. McBrearty, Cath. Clergyman and the witnesses were John Bartly and Margaret Owens.

who will probably prove to be James's parents and siblings (when or if I get around to digging up a few more details).

[The presence of the apostrophe in Owen's Land (and in the adjacent two Owen's Houses) is consistent in the enumerator's book. Were it not there, one might infer that the Owens family had a proprietorial interest in these buildings.]

 


The Family of Michael Hayes & Mary Kennedy, 1889

Michael Hayes was born on Wednesday, September 16, 1863 at Eastmuir, Shettleston to Ellen Hooks (c1832 - 1902) and James Hayes, Coal Miner (c1830 - 1871). [See Section HS-5-1 for family background.]

Mary Kennedy was born about 1865 in Glasgow to Catherine McBride ( - ) and Terence Kennedy, Labourer ( - before 1889).


1889 On Thursday, April 25, Michael Hayes and Mary Kennedy were married at St. Michael's Chapel, Parkhead, Glasgow after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.99 at Glasgow [Camlachie District] on May 1.

Michael was a Bachelor, gave his age as 24, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence 114 Eastmuir Street, Shettleston. His parents are recorded as James Hayes, Miner (deceased) and Ellen Hayes m.s. Hooks.

Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 22, occupation Yarn Winder and usual residence 160 Great Eastern Road [now part of the Gallowgate], Glasgow. Her parents are recorded as Terence Kennedy, Labourer (deceased) and Catherine Kennedy m.s. McBride.

The celebrant was H. Doody and the witnesses were Alexander Hayes [probably Michael's brother] and Louisa Donnelly. [Fr. Edward Doody was the first parish priest of St. Joseph's, Tollcross when it was established in 1893, but stayed less than a year.]

Mary and Louisa made their marks, Michael and Alexander signed.

1895 Ellen Hayes was born at 8h0m p.m. on Sunday, October 27 at 96 Eastmuir Street, Shettleston to Mary Hayes m.s. Kennedy and Michael Hayes, Coal Miner who married on April 25, 1888 [sic] at Camlachie, Glasgow. Her birth was registered No.447 at Shettleston on October 29 by Michael Hayes, Father.

Sadly, Ellen did not live long.

1895 Ellen Hayes (Single) died at 0h30m p.m. on Tuesday, October 29 at 86 [sic] Eastmuir Street, Shettleston, age 2 days, of Debility as certified by R. Davidson, MBCM. Her parents are recorded as Michael Hayes, Coal Miner and Mary Hayes m.s. Kennedy. Her death was registered No.215 at Shettleston on the same day by Michael Hayes, Father.

1910 Mary Hayes, Married to Michael Hayes, Coal Miner, died at 2h a.m. on Sunday, June 5 at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow, [usual residence blank,] age 47 years, of Phthisis Pulmonalis, as certified by John M. Henderson, MB. Her parents are recorded as Terrence Kennedy, Labourer and Catherine Kennedy m.s. McBride, both deceased. Her death was registered No.485 at Glasgow [Springburn District] on the following day by Michael Hayes, Widower, Gladstone Place, Shettleston.

Mary Hayes (age 47) was buried on June 7 in Dalbeth Common Ground, cause of death Consumption and a fee of 10/6d was paid.

Elizabeth Greer was born on Monday, May 23, 1870 at 83 Graigmark, Dalmellington, Ayrshire to Jane McMillan ( - ) and Thomas Greer, Coal Miner ( - ). [See Section GR-5-1 for family background.]


1890 On Wednesday, January 1, Alexander Hayes and Elizabeth Greer were married at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.7 at Shettleston on January 4.

Alexander was a Bachelor, gave his age as 21, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence 114 Eastmuir Street, Shettleston. His parents are recorded as James Hayes, Coal Miner (deceased) and Helen Hayes m.s. Hooks.

Elizabeth was a Spinster, age 19, occupation Roperie Worker and usual residence Union Place, Shettleston. Her parents are recorded as Thomas Greer, Coal Miner and Jane Greer m.s. McMillan.

The celebrant was Joseph Van Hecke and the witnesses were John Hendry and Mary Greer [probably Elizabeth's twin sister].

Annie Watson was born on Friday, January 30, 1874 in Wishaw to Mary Connelly (1850 - ) and Edward Watson, Coalminer (c1849 - 1887). [See Section WS-6-1 for family background.]


1896 On Wednesday, April 8, Owen Hayes and Annie Watson were married at St. Paul's R.C. Church, Shettleston after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.32 at Shettleston on April 13.

Owen was a Bachelor, gave his age as 25, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence 29 McNair Street, Shettleston. His parents are recorded as James Hayes, Coal Miner (deceased) and Ellen Hayes m.s. Hooks.

Annie was a Spinster, age 22, occupation Power Loom Weaver and usual residence 97 Eastmuir Street, Shettleston. Her parents are recorded as Edward Watson, Coal Miner (deceased) and Mary Watson m.s. Connelly.

The celebrant was Patrick Gaule, R.C.C. and the witnesses were Henry Dulens and Ellen Watson [probably Annie's sister].

Margaret R. Hayes (age 2 months) was buried on December 18th in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth, cause of death Convulsions and a fee of 8/6d was paid. She is said to be the Daughter of the owner of the lair, 195, section 15W, with title number 4416. The grave was opened to a depth of 8 feet.

Owen and Annie had been married for 15 years and produced 7 children of whom 6 were still living, the exception being Margaret Rita (1902). Annie seems to have forgotten that she was born in Wishaw.
