To address the gap between Ann and Elizabeth, I would postulate the following Mary Hay, residing within the household of Samuel Simpson at the Village of Hamilton Farm, a settlement of 47 families, mostly coal miners, on the eastern edge of Rutherglen, near enough where now stands Clydebridge Steel Works.

1865 On Tuesday, March 7, Ann Hays registered the death of her nephew Robert McAnulty in Shettleston, giving her own address as Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow.

 


The Family of James Hayes & Helen Hooks, 1851

James Hayes was born about 1830 in Co. Armagh, Ireland to Margaret (or Elizabeth) Gillon ( - ) and Michael Hay, Mason's Labourer (c1798 - ). [See above for family background.]

Helen Hooks was born about 1831 in Bridgeton, Glasgow to Helen Lyons ( - ) and John Hooks, Farmer ( - ).


1851 From the Register of Marriages in St. Columbkille's, Rutherglen —

James Hayes + Helen Hooks, after due proclamation of banns were married by me in the presence of Thomas McGuire + Anne Hayes on [Tuesday,] the sixteenth day of September 1851. John Shaw R.C.C.

Her birth was registered No.224 at Shettleston on November 28 by James Hay, "his X mark", Father, Not Present.

She was baptised (as Ellen Hay) on December 2 in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir. Her parents are recorded as James Hay and Ellen Hooks. [Index entry]

James married Ellen Glacken in 1877 then Margaret Gibbons in 1884, both in Shettleston.


1859 Ann Hayes was born at 10h0m a.m. on Sunday, November 27 at Eastmuir, Shettleston, Lanark to Helen Hayes m.s. Hooks and James Hayes, Coal Miner. Her birth was registered No.257 at Shettleston on December 8 by James Hayes, "his X mark", Father, Not present.

Sadly, Ann died in 1861, aged 20 months.

Sadly, John died in 1864, aged 2 years and 5½ months.

1865 A second John Hayes was born at 6h45m a.m. on Wednesday, May 24 at Eastmuir, Shettleston, Lanark to Helen Hayes m.s. Hooks and James Hayes, Coal Miner who married on September 16, 1851 at Rutherglen. His birth was registered No.116 at Shettleston on May 31 by James Hayes, "his X mark", Father.

Her baptism didn't show up with the others.

Janet married Michael Connolly in 1888 in Shettleston.


1868 Alexander Hay was born at 0h30m a.m. on Wednesday, September 30 at Crofs-spars, Shettleston, Lanark to Helen Hay m.s. Hooks and James Hay, Fireman in Pit who married on September 16, 1851 at Rutherglen. His birth was registered No.201 at Shettleston on October 15 by Helen Hayes [sic], "her X mark", Mother.

He was baptised (as Alexander Hays) on October ? in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir. His parents are recorded as James Hays and Ellen Hooks. [Index entry]

1871 James Hayes, Pauper (formerly a Brusher in Coal Pit), married to Helen Hooks, died at 6h0m p.m. on Tuesday, November 28 at Eastmuir St., Shettleston, Lanark, age 41 years, of Asthenia [Weakness] after a Long Period, as certified by George R. Mather, M.D. His parents are recorded as Michael Hayes, Mason's Labourer and Margaret Hayes m.s. Gillon, both deceased. His death was registered No.160 at Shettleston on December 1 by John Skivington, "his X mark", Neighbour, Not present.

James Hayes (age 41) was buried on December 2nd in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth, cause of death Inflamation and a fee of 8/6d was paid. He is said to be the Husband of the owner of the lair, 286, section 4E. Unfortunately, there is no title recorded for this lair.

His birth was registered No.199 at Shettleston on July 30 by Helen Hay, "her X mark", Mother and Thomas Rodden, Father.

1881 April 3 The nearest I can find to the family in the 1881 census is this household at 30 Eastmuir Street, Shettleston in a house with two windowed rooms.

1902 Helen Hayes, Widow of James Hayes, Coal Miner, died at 11h30m p.m. on Wednesday, July 23 at 259 Main Street, Shettleston [the home of her son James in the 1901 census], age 67 years, of Cerebral Congestion, 1 year, Mental Deterioration, 1 year, as certified by George Wilson, MBCM. Her parents are recorded as John Hooks, Farmer and Helen Hooks m.s. Lyons, both deceased. Her death was registered No.218 at Shettleston on the following day by James Hayes, Son, Present.

Ellen Hayes (age 67) was buried on the 25th in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth, cause of death Debility and a fee of 14/6d was paid. She is said to be the Mother of the owner of the lair, 196, section 15W, with title number 4312.
