The Family of Thomas McNulty & Catherine McGee, 1861

Thomas McNulty was born in Shettleston about 1842 to Elizabeth Murray and Robert McNulty. [See Section MY-5-1 for family background.]

He had a brother John, born about 1836 in Co. Derry, who married Elizabeth Dunigan in 1862. [See Section MY-6-1 for further information.]

And another brother Robert, born about 1838 in Ireland, who married Mary Hay in 1863. [See Section MY-6-2 for further information.]

Catherine McGee was born on September 15, 1842 in Shettleston, Lanarkshire to Catherine Dunigan (c1817 - 1859) and William McGee (c1819 - 185x). [See Section DN-4-1 for family background.]

1860 William McGee was born at 4h0m a.m. on Monday, December 10 in Shettleston, Lanarkshire, to Catherine McGee, Steamloom Weaver. His father is not named. His birth was registered No. 248 at Shettleston on the same day by Elizabeth Donoughan [Dunigan], "her X mark", Grandaunt, Present.

There is an entry in the register of Baptisms for the parish of St. Paul's Eastmuir for 1860 as follows—

William, child of Thomas McNulty and Catherine McGee, Catholics, born December 10, baptised December 12, sponsor Elizabeth Dunigan, clergyman Patrick McLaughlin.

I have not found young William with either parent in the 1861 census, nor have I found any record of his death (so far).

1861 On Tuesday, April 23, Thomas McNulty and Catherine McGee were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston [St. Paul's] After Banns According to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No. 9 at Shettleston on April 25.

Thomas was a Bachelor, aged 19, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Shettleston Parish. His parents are recorded as Robert McInulty [sic], Coal Miner and Elizabeth McInulty m.s. Murray.

Catherine was a Spinster, aged 18, no occupation given and usual address Shettleston Parish. Her parents are recorded as William McGee, Coal Miner and Catherine McGee m.s. Dounagin [sic], both deceased.

The celebrant was P McLaughlin, Pastor of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Eastmuir and the witnesses were Patrick Reynolds and Catherine Dunigan, both of whom made their marks.

The marriage is also recorded in the register of St. Paul's, Eastmuir —

Thomas McNulty & Catherine McGee, after due proclamation of Banns, were married by me in the presence of Patrick Reynolds and Catherine Dunigan. Patrick McLaughlin.

[Note :– Now, it may be that this Patrick Reynolds is a stranger from out of town but there are only two Patrick Reynolds living in Shettleston at this time, my great great grandfather aged 35 and one of his sons aged 5. It seems a little odd that 19-year-old Thomas would have a 35-year-old married man as his best man but I'm sure stranger things have happened. (It may be relevant that both men were coal miners, or that the Reynolds family lived next door to the church.)]

Thomas and Catherine had the following children (that I know of) —

Thomas's brother Robert and Mary (Hay) were not far away at No.28.

1872 John McAnulty was born at 8h0m a.m. on Wednesday, November 13 at Newtown, Catrine to Catherine McAnulty m.s. His birth was registered No.135 at Sorn on November 20 by Mary Moan, Aunt, Present, Cornmill Street, Catrine.

Since I am confident that Catherine had no (surviving) siblings, I think we are looking at a Mary McNulty/McAnulty married to John Moan.

McGhee and Thomas McAnulty, Ironstone Miner who married on April 23, 1861 at East Muir, Lanark. Her birth was registered No.72 at Sorn on June 8 by Catherine McAnulty, "her X mark", Mother.
