The Family of Robert McAnulty & Mary Hays, 1863

Robert McNulty was born about 1838 in Ireland to Elizabeth Murray ( - ) and Robert McNulty, Coal Miner ( - ). [See Section MY-5-1 for family background.]

Mary Hays was born about 1838 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire to Elizabeth Gillon ( - ) and Michael Hays, Quarryman ( - ).


1863 On Monday, October 19, Robert McAnulty and Mary Hay [sic] were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston [St. Paul's] after Banns According to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No. 44 at Shettleston on the following day.

Robert was a Bachelor, gave his age as 25, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Shettleston Parish. His parents are recorded as Robert McAnulty, Coal Miner and Elizabeth McAnulty m.s. Murray.

Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 25, no occupation recorded and usual residence also Shettleston Parish. Her parents are recorded as Michael Hay, Quarryman and Elizabeth Hay m.s. Gillon.

The celebrant was P McLaughlin, Pastor of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Eastmuir and the witnesses were John McAnulty and Ann Hay.

The marriage is also recorded in the register of St. Paul's, Eastmuir —

Robert McNulty & Mary Hays, after due proclamation of Banns, were married by me in the presence of John McNulty and Ann Hays. Patrick McLaughlin.

Robert and Mary had the following children (that I know of) —

Robertborn in 1865 in Shettleston and died 6 weeks later.
Michaelborn in 1868 in Shettleston and died 11 weeks later.


1865 Robert McAnulty was born at 10h40m p.m. on Sunday, January 22 at Shettleston, Lanark to Mary McAnulty m.s. Hays and Robert McAnulty, Coal Miner who married on October 19, 1863 at Eastmuir. His birth was registered No.20 at Shettleston on February 2 by Robert McAnulty, "his X mark", Father.

Sadly, Robert did not live long.

1865 Robert McAnulty (Single) died at 0h30m a.m. on Saturday, March 4 at Shettleston, Lanark, age 6 weeks, of Teething after 6 weeks, as certified by George Rallander, M.D. His parents are recorded as Robert McAnulty, Coal Miner and Mary McAnulty m.s. Hays. His death was registered No.36 at Shettleston on March 7 by Ann Hays, "her X mark", Aunt residing in Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow, Not Present.


1868 Michael McAnulty was born at 6h0m a.m. on Thursday, July 9 at Eastmuir, Shettleston, Lanark to Mary McAnulty m.s. Hay and Robert McAnulty, Coal Miner who married on October 19, 1863 at Eastmuir. His birth was registered No.135 at Shettleston on July 21 by Robert McAnulty, "his X mark", Father.

Sadly, Michael fared little better than his brother.

1868 Michael McAnulty (Single) died at 2h0m a.m. on Tuesday, September 29 at Eastmuir, Shettleston, Lanark, age (he was 11 weeks old), of Tabes Mesenterica [tuberculosis of lymph glands inside the abdomen] after Four Months, as certified by George Willis, Surgeon. His parents are recorded as Robert McAnulty, Coal Miner and Mary McAnulty m.s. Hay. His death was registered No.103 at Shettleston on the following day by Robert McAnulty, "his X mark", Father, Present.


1871 April 2 Robert and Mary had moved to the mining village of Glenlogan near Sorn, Ayrshire, where they were lodgers with a family named Ewing at No.28.

It would appear that the Ewings and McInultys had one room each in a house with two windowed rooms.

Robert's brother Thomas and Catherine (McGee) were not far away at No.19.
