Carrigeen and other parts of Ireland

Legend has it that the Dunnes fled Antrim in Cromwellian times and started afresh in South Tipperary. Griffith's Valuation of that area, compiled in 1853, shows the following taxable residents in the townland of Carrigeen -

By the early 1880s, most of the family had emigrated leaving Billy Dunne and his wife Ellen Lyons in sole possession of the farm.

Their family consisted of —

  • Edmund (Ned) — born in 1875, died in 1956
  • Margaret (Peg) Mary — 1877 - 1969
  • Catherine (Kate) — 1879 - 1965
  • John (Jack) — 1882, died when he was about 12
  • Patrick — 1885, died before his first birthday
  • Mary Bridget (Bab) — 1886 - 19??
  • Helena (Lena) — 1889 - 1979

Billy supplemented a meagre agricultural income with his earnings as a Master Mason and builder including in his works the Convent and School in Newinn, and a house for the mother of the then Archbishop Shine of Liverpool.

Kate was baptised in Newinn on Sunday, September 7, 1879, her godparents being Miles Heffernan and Margaret Dunne. She married Frank Corbett (son of William and Kate Corbett, Clonmel) sometime in the 1920s and moved to Clonmel but he died on March 3, 1930 and she returned to Carrigeen to keep house for Billy and Ned. She was the last occupant of the house when she died on Sunday, July 11, 1965, and after her death the house collapsed and was removed when the road was straightened in the early 1970s

    costume, I was fully bent
on a grey but they would
not even show it to me, I
should take one of the fashionable
colours (lime or brown) so I
chose the later. I hope you
wont mind for Kate said you
    intended getting brown. It
is a very light shade &
    rather dear. You get brown
too, it will be a change from navy.
