The Family of George Goodwin & Mary Cosgrove, 1888

George Goodwin was born on July 26, 1864 at Clyde Iron Works, Old Monkland West, to Catherine Meighan / Muggan (c1840 - 1886) and James Goodwin (c1840 - ). [See Section GW-6-1 for family background.]

Mary Cosgrove was born about 1870 in Carstairs, Lanarkshire, to Mary Fairley and Patrick Cosgrove.


1888 On Thursday, May 31, George Goodwin and Mary Cosgrove were married at the Roman Catholic Church, Bathgate [The Immaculate Conception] after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.20 at Bathgate on June 4.

George was a Bachelor, age 23, occupation Goods Guard (Raily) and usual residence 8 South Bridge Street, Bathgate. His parents are recorded as James Goodwin, Furnaceman and Catherine Goodwin m.s. Moogans.

Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 18 , occupation Domestic Servant and usual residence 2 Academy Street, Bathgate. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Cosgrove, Coal Miner and Mary Cosgrove m.s. Fairley.

The celebrant was Patrick Harris and the witnesses were James Cosgrove and Marianne Farrell.

George and Mary had the following children (that I know of) —

Maryborn in 1889 in Bathgate, West Lothian, last sighting 1901.
Jamesborn in 1891 at Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross, last sighting 1901.
Georgeborn in 1894 in Newton, Cambuslang and probably died before 1901.
Catherineborn about 1896 in Cambuslang, last sighting 1901.
Patrickborn about 1898 in Cambuslang, last sighting 1901.
Johnborn about 1900 in Cambuslang, last sighting 1901.


1889 Mary Goodwin was born at 8h30m a.m.on Saturday, May 18 at 8 Livery Street, Bathgate to Mary Goodwin m.s. Cosgrove and George Goodwin, Goods Guard (Raily) who married on May 31, 1888 at Bathgate. Her birth was registered No.127 at Bathgate on June 7 by Mary Goodwin, Mother.


1891 James Goodwin was born at 2h20m a.m.on Friday, January 16 at Clyde Iron Works, Lanarkshire to Mary Goodwin m.s. Cosgrove and George Goodwin, Railway Guard who married on May 28 [sic], 1888 at Bathgate. His birth was registered No.35 at Baillieston (District of Old Monkland West) on January 27 by George Goodwin, Father.

"Vaccinated as per cert. dated 14th July, 1891. NY, Asst. Reg."


1891 April 5 The family was living in Brickiln Row, Clyde Iron Works in a house with ? windowed rooms.

1894 George Goodwin was born at 11h10m a.m.on , March 8 at 31 Clyde Street, Newton, Cambuslang to Mary Goodwin m.s. Cosgrove and George Goodwin, Locomotive Engine Driver who married on May 31, 1888 at Bathgate. His birth was registered No.148 at Cambuslang on March 30 by George Goodwin, Father.


c1896 Catherine was born.


c1898 Patrick was born.


c1900 John was born.


1901 March 31 The family was living at 16 Clyde Street, Newton, Cambuslang in a house with ? windowed rooms. [The only family with this address]
