James Goodwin was born about 1839 in Ireland to Ann Cairns/Carrol (c1820 - 1903) and George Goodwin (c1818 - ). [See Section GW-5-1 for family background.]

Catherine Muggan was born about 1840 in Ireland to Catherine Handlay and Patrick Meigan.

1861 April 7 This looks like Catherine's family residing in McAllan's Land (between Wellshot House and Wellshot Cottage) in a house with one windowed room. 5 families share this address.

1863 On Tuesday, September 29, James Goodwin and Catherine Meighan [sic] were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston [St. Paul's] After Banns according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.42 at Shettleston on September 30.

James was a Bachelor, gave his age as 24, occupation Blast Furnaceman and usual residence Clyde Iron Works, Old Monkland Parish. His parents are recorded as George Goodwin, Blastfurnaceman and Ann Goodwin m.s. Carrol.

Catherine was a Spinster, gave her age as 23, occupation Out Door Worker and usual residence Middlequarter, Shettleston Parish. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Meigan, Labourer, deceased and Catherine Meigan m.s. Handlay.

The celebrant was P. McLaughlin, Pastor of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Eastmuir and the witnesses were James McCourt and Bridget Meigan.

The marriage is also recorded in the Register of Marriages in St. Paul's, Eastmuir but with what I read as Morgan rather than Meighan or Muggan.

Their known children (all born at the Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross, Lanarkshire unless otherwise stated) are —

1864 George Goodwin was born at 4h a.m. on Tuesday, July 26 at Clyde Iron Works, Lanarkshire to Catherine Goodwin m.s. Muggan and James Goodwin, Blast Furnaceman who married on September 29 at Eastmuir near Glasgow. His birth was registered No.206 at Faulds, Baillieston [Old Monkland West] on the same day by James Goodwin, "his X mark", Father.

Note that Catherine's surname has changed back to Muggan, and remains so (or close to it).

George was baptised on August 7 by Fr. Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir with sponsors Henry Devine and Bridget Morgan. His mother's surname is recorded as Morgan.


1866 Catherine Goodwin was born at 8h30m p.m. on Tuesday, March 6 at Clyde Iron Works to Catherine Goodwin m.s. Muggan and James Goodwin, Blast Furnaceman who married on September 29, 1863 at Eastmuir near Glasgow. Her birth was registered No.74 at Faulds, Baillieston on March 8 by James Goodwin, "his X mark", Father.

She was baptised on March 18 by [Fr. Patrick McLaughlin] in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir. Her mother's surname is recorded as Moogan. [Index entry]


1868 James Goodwin was born at 6h a.m. on Monday, June 1 at Clyde Iron Works to Catherine Goodwin m.s. Muggan and James Goodwin, Blast Furnaceman who married on September 29, 1863 at Eastmuir near Glasgow. His birth was registered No.162 at Faulds, Baillieston on June 3 by James Goodwin, "his X mark", Father.

He was baptised on June 21 by Fr. Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir with sponsors Timothy Reynolds and Bridget Connor. His mother's surname is recorded as Morgan.


1870 Ann Goodwin was born at 6h a.m. on Friday, September 23 at Clyde Iron Works to Catherine Goodwin m.s. Muggan and James Goodwin, Blast Furnaceman, Iron Works, who married on September 29, 1863 at Eastmuir. Her birth was registered No.238 at Faulds, Baillieston on September 26 by James Goodwin, "his X mark", Father.

She was baptised in September by [Fr. Patrick McLaughlin] in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir. Her mother's surname is recorded as Moogan. [Index entry]

1871 Mary Goodwin was born at 10h30m a.m. on Thursday, September 14 at Clyde Iron Works to Catherine Goodwin m.s. Muggan and James Goodwin, Blast Furnaceman, Iron Works, who married on September 29, 1863 at Eastmuir. Her birth was registered No.236 at Faulds, Baillieston on September 23 by James Goodwin, "his X mark", Father.

She was baptised in September (day not visible) by Fr. George McBrearty in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir with sponsors John Mullan and Maryanne Goodwin. Her mother's surname is recorded as Muggars.


1873 Ann Goodwin (Single) died at 2h30m a.m. on Friday, October 31 at Clyde Iron Works, age 3 years, of Scarlatina, 10 days, as certified by R. Steven, Surgeon. Her parents are recorded as James Goodwin, Blast Furnace Keeper and Catherine Goodwin m.s. Muggan. Her death was registered No.139 at Baillieston on November 3 by James Goodwin, "his X mark", Father, Present.

1873 Catherine Goodwin (Single) died at 2h a.m. on Sunday, November 9 at Clyde Iron Works, age 7⅔ years, of Scarlatina, 11 days, as certified by R. Steven, Surgeon. Her parents are recorded as James Goodwin, Blast Furnace Keeper and Catherine Goodwin m.s. Muggan. Her death was registered No.145 at Baillieston on November 14 by James Goodwin, "his X mark", Father, Present.


1877 Thomas Goodwin was born at 11h0m a.m. on Tuesday, July 10 at Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross to Catherine Goodwin m.s. Mougin [sic] and James Goodwin, Blast Furnaceman, who married on September 29, 1863 at Eastmuir, Parish of Shettleston. His birth was registered No.194 at Baillieston on July 17 by James Goodwin, "his X mark", Father.

He was baptised on July 22 by Fr. George McBrearty in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir with sponsors Patrick Cooney and Ann Havelin. His mother's surname is recorded as Morgan.

1886 Catherine Goodwin, Married to James Goodwin, Furnace Keeper, died at 5h0m p.m. on Saturday, October 16 at Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross, age 46 years, of Inflamation of Lungs, 14 days, as certified by Alexander Scott, MBCM. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Muggin, Agricultural Labourer (deceased) and Catherine Muggin m.s. Hauley. Her death was registered No.148 at Baillieston on the same day by George Goodwin, Son, Present.

[Note :– I wonder when the office closed. It's a good couple of miles to Baillieston, even if he took the train from Carmyle.]


1888 May 28 On Monday, May 28, George married Mary Cosgrove in Bathgate, Linlithgowshire. [See Section GW-7-1 for further details.]


1891 April 5 The remnant of the family was living in 1 Rail Row, Clyde Iron Works in a house with one windowed room.

1895 On Thursday, February 21, James Campbell and Mary Goodwin were married at Clyde Iron Works after Publication according to the Forms of the R.C. Church. The marriage was registered No.9 at Baillieston on February 25.

James was a Bachelor, gave his age as 30, occupation Labourer and usual residence 22 Dandy Row, Clyde Iron Works. His parents are recorded as John Campbell, Labourer and Mary Campbell m.s. Trot, both deceased.

Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 24, occupation Housekeeper and usual residence 25 Dandy Row, Clyde Iron Works. Her parents are recorded as James Goodwin, Furnace Foreman and Mary Goodwin m.s. Muggins (deceased).

The celebrant was James H. Kirk, R.C.C. Tollcross and the witnesses were Robert McGlinchy and Mary McGindy.

[Note :– The parish of St. Joseph's, Tollcross was split off from St. Paul's, Shettleston in 1893. The first church/school, on London Road across from the Clyde Iron Works, was officially opened on June 16, 1895 so this marriage took place either in the uncompleted building, or in whatever temporary premises were used prior to the church opening. That church was destroyed by fire, caused by a spark from a passing railway engine, in 1904 and replaced by a new church/school on Easterhill Street in 1906.]
