The Family of John McFaul & Mary Lynch, 1878

John McFaul was born about 1855/6 in Ireland to Bridget Docherty and Daniel McFaul, Farmer, both of whom were dead by the time of his marriage in 1878.

Mary Lynch was born on March 19, 1858 in Lightburn, Shettleston Parish to Ann McGee (c1833 - 1890) and Patrick Lynch, Coal Miner, (c1835 - ). [See Section LH-6-1 for family background.]


1878 On Tuesday, June 18, John McFaul and Mary Lynch were married at the Roman Catholic Chapel, Rutherglen [St Columbkille's] after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.45 at Rutherglen on June 22.

John was a Bachelor, gave his age as 22, occupation Colliery Sinker and usual residence as the Parish of Cambuslang. His parents are recorded as Daniel McFaul, Farmer, and Bridget McFaul, m.s. Docherty, both deceased.

Mary was a Spinster aged 20, occupation Power Loom Weaver and usual residence also the Parish of Cambuslang. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Lynch, Coalminer and Annie Lynch, m.s. McGhee.

The celebrant was Fr. John Shaw and the witnesses were John Cunningham and Sarah Colvin. [Mary had a cousin Sarah Colvin who would have been 16½ at this date.]

The marriage is recorded in the Register of Marriages for St. Columbkille's, Rutherglen between John McFaulls and Mary Lynch. [Index entry]

John and Mary had the following children (that I know of) —

Danielborn in 1878 in Lightburn, Cambuslang and died in 1886, aged 7 years.
Patrickborn in 1880 in Baillieston, married Hannah Boyle in 1908, last sighting 1906.
Annieborn in 1885 in Stonefield, Blantyre, and died there in 1886.
Johnborn in 1887 in Newton, Cambuslang, last sighting 1911.
Susanborn in 1888 in Newton, Cambuslang, last sighting 1901.

John had further children with his second wife Catherine Madden.


1878 Daniel McFall was born at 5h45m p.m. on Wednesday, October 16 at Lightburn, Cambuslang to Mary McFall m.s. Lynch and John McFall, Coal Pit Sinker who married on June 18 1878 at Rutherglen. His birth was registered No.331 at Cambuslang on November 5 by Mary McFall, "her X mark", Mother.

Daniel died in Stonefield, Blantyre in 1886, aged 7 years.


1880 Patrick McFaul was born at 7h0m a.m. on Sunday, November 28 at Penders Row, Baillieston to Mary McFaul m.s Lynch and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on June 18, 1878 at Rutherglen. His birth was registered No.284 at Baillieston on December 9 by John McFaul, Father.

Patrick married Hannah Boyle in 1908 in Wishaw.


1881 April 3 The family were living at Penders Row, Baillieston, in a house with one windowed room.

Mary seems to be ageing well, having gained only one year since her marriage in 1878.


1885 Annie McFaul was born at 9h30m a.m. on Monday, April 13 at 55 McAlpines Buildings, Stonefield, Blantyre to Mary McFaul m.s. Lynch and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on June 18, 1878 at Rutherglen. Her birth was registered No.129 at Blantyre on April 20 by John McFaul, Father.

Sadly, Annie died the following year.


1886 Daniel McFaul (Single) died at 0h5m p.m. on Thursday, May 6 at McAlpine's Buildings, Stonefield, Blantyre, age 7 years, of Enteric Fever, Tabes Mesenterica [tuberculosis of lymph glands inside the abdomen] as certified by William Grant, M.B.Ch.B. His parents are recorded as John McFaul, Pit Sinker and Mary McFaul m.s. Lynch. His death was registered No.79 at Blantyre on the same day by John McFaul, Father, Present.

Daniel (age 7) was buried on May 8 in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth. [Index entry]


1886 Annie McFaul (Single) died at 0h15m a.m. on Sunday, September 5 at McAlpines Buildings, Stonefield, Blantyre, age 16 months, of Whooping Cough, 2 months, Phthisis 1 month as certified by R.B. Macpherson, M.B.C.M. Her parents are recorded as John McFaul, Pit Sinker and Mary McFaul m.s. Lynch. Her death was registered No.145 at Blantyre on the following day by John McFaul, Father, Present.

Annie (age 1) was buried on the following day in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth. [Index entry]


1887 John McFaul was born at 5h0m p.m. on Thursday, September 29 at 24 Clyde Street, Newton, Cambuslang to Mary McFaul m.s. Lynch and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on June 18, 1878 at Rutherglen. His birth was registered No.538 at Cambuslang on December 9 by John McFaul, Father.


1888 Susan McFaul was born at 0h30m p.m. on Sunday, December 2 at 41 Clyde Street, Newton, Cambuslang to Mary McFaul m.s. Lynch and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on June 18, 1878 at Rutherglen. Her birth was registered No.511 at Cambuslang on December 6 by John McFaul, Father.


1888 On Wednesday, December 26, Mary McFaul, Married to John McFaul, Pit Sinker, died at 3h20m a.m. at 41 Clyde Street, Newton, Cambuslang, aged 31 [she was 30], of Cardiac Valvular Disease, 2 years, Dropsy + Congestion of lungs, 1 month as certified by R.B.Macpherson, M.B.C.M. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Lynch, Coal Miner and Ann Lynch, m.s. McGee. Her death was registered No.215 at Cambuslang the same day by John McFaul, Widower, Present.

There is an entry in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth - Internments in Common Ground for the burial of Mary McFaill on December 28, age 31, cause of death Heart Disease and a burial fee of ten shillings.

 


The Family of John McFaul & Catherine Madden, 1889

1889 John McFaul and Catherine Madden were married on Monday, August 19 in St. Andrew's Cathedral, Great Clyde Street, Glasgow after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.395 at Glasgow (District of Blythswood) on August 19.

John was a Widower, gave his age as 33, occupation Colliery Roadsman and usual address 18 Old Rows, Newton. His parents are recorded as Daniel McFaul, Flesher and Bridget McFaul m.s. Docherty, both deceased.

Catherine was a Spinster, gave her age as 29, occupation Domestic Servant and usual address 8 Princes Street, Glasgow. Her parents are recorded as James Madden, Coal Pit Labourer and Agnes Madden m.s. Moore.

The celebrant was Alex Munro, D.D. and the witnesses were John McDermott and Catherine Brown.

John and Catherine had the following children (that I know of) —

Danielborn in 1899 in Blantyre, last sighting 1911.
Josephborn prematurely in 1903 in Blantyre and lived only 2 hours.

which tallies with the 1911 census count.


1890 Twins Bridget McFaulds and Annie McFaulds were born at 5h0m a.m. and 5h5m a.m. respectively on Friday, April 11 at 18 Old Rows, Newton, Cambuslang to Catherine McFaulds m.s. Madden and John McFaulds, Coal Pit Roadsman who married on August 19, 1889 in Blythswood District, Glasgow. Their births were registered Nos.119 and 200 at Cambuslang on April 22 by John McFaulds, Father.


1891 April 5 The family were living in Front Row, Blantyre in a house with one windowed room.

Quite a change. Patrick, John and Susan are the surviving children of John and Mary Lynch.


1891 Catherine McFaul was born at 9h10m a.m. on Monday, June 8 at Front Row, Blantyre Works, Blantyre to Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on August 19, 1889 in Glasgow. Her birth was registered No.257 at Blantyre on June 16 by John McFaul, Father.


1892 Twins Mary McFaul and Elizabeth McFaul were born at 5h30m a.m. and 6h0m a.m. respectively on Friday, November 11 at Front Row, Blantyre Works, Blantyre to Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on August 19, 1889 in Glasgow. Their births were registered Nos.450 and 451 at Blantyre on November 15 by John McFaul, Father.

Sadly, neither twin lived long.

1893 Elizabeth McFaul (Single) died at 1h20m p.m. on Tuesday, January 10 at Front Row, Blantyre Works, Blantyre, age 2 months, of Infantile Marasmus as certified by J. Rowan Wilson, M.B.C.M. Her parents are recorded as John McFaul, Pit Sinker and Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden. Her death was registered No.12 at Blantyre on the following day by John McFaul, Father.

1893 Mary McFaul (Single) died at 11h25m p.m. on Monday, January 23 at Front Row, Blantyre Works, Blantyre, age 2 months, of Infantile Marasmus, 1 month as certified by J. Rowan Wilson, M.B.C.M. Her parents are recorded as John McFaul, Pit Sinker and Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden. Her death was registered No.24 at Blantyre on the same day by John McFaul, Father.


1895 James McFaul was born at 11h0m a.m. on Monday, February 11 at Waterloo Row, Blantyre to Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on August 19, 1889 in Glasgow. His birth was registered No.74 at Blantyre on February 19 by John McFaul, Father.


1896 Mary McFaul was born at 9h30m a.m. on Thursday, May 28 at Waterloo Row, Blantyre to Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on August 19, 1889 in Glasgow. Her birth was registered No.262 at Blantyre on June 8 by John McFaul, Father.


1899 Daniel McFaul was born at 7h0m a.m. on Tuesday, April 4 at Waterloo Row, Blantyre to Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden and John McFaul, Pit Sinker who married on August 19, 1889 in Glasgow. His birth was registered No.365 at Blantyre on August 12 by John McFaul, Father.

1903 Joseph McFaul was born at 2h0m p.m. on Monday, February 16 at Cross Row, Village of Blantyre to Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden and John McFaul, Coal Miner who married on August 19, 1889 in Glasgow. His birth was registered No.101 at Blantyre on the same day by John McFaul, Father.

Sadly, Joseph did not live long.

1903 Joseph McFaul (Single) died at 4h0m p.m. on Monday, February 16 at Cross Row, Village of Blantyre, age 2 hours, of Premature Birth as certified by W. Airles Ogilvy, L.R.C.P. etc. His parents are recorded as John McFaul, Coal Miner and Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden. His death was registered No.45 at Blantyre on the same day by John McFaul, Father, Present.


1908 On Friday, September 25, Patrick McFaul and Hannah Nolan were married at St. Ignatius Chapel, Wishaw after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.145 at Wishaw on the following day.

Patrick was a Bachelor, gave his age as 28, occupation Coalminer and usual residence 30 Glasgow Road, Wishaw. His parents are recorded as John McFaul, Coalminer and Mary McFaul m.s. Lynch (deceased).

Hannah was a Widow, gave her age as 36, no occupation recorded and usual residence 40 Roberts Street, Wishaw. Her parents are recorded as James Boyle, Quarryman and Margaret Boyle m.s. Oliver.

The celebrant was Jos. Van Hecke [formerly of St. Paul's, Shettleston] and the witnesses were John Harris and Maggie Ghee.


1911 April 2 The family were living at 20 New Lands, Blantyre, in a house with two windowed rooms. (At least 5 families share this address.)

John and Catherine had been married for 21 years and produced 9 children of whom 6 were still living, the exceptions being twins Mary and Elizabeth (1892 - 1893) and Joseph (1903).

John's occupation - Coal Miner (shankman) - translates as Pit Sinker. Son John was born in Newton, Cambuslang.

We are missing Catherine (19) plus Susan (22), daughter of John and Mary Lynch.


1911 Mary McFaul, Boot Repairing Canvasser, Single, died at 4h30m a.m. on Thursday, December 14 at 42 Hall Street, Blantyre, age 15 years, of Gangrenous Stomatitis Septicaemia [blood poisoning from mouth cancer] as certified by Thos. P. Grant, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as John McFaul, Coal Miner and Catherine McFaul m.s. Madden. Her death was registered No.258 at Blantyre on the same day by Annie McFaul, Sister, Present.
