The Family of Patrick Lynch & Ann McGee, 1855

Patrick Lynch was born in Co. Sligo, Ireland about 1833, to Mary Murray and Patrick Lynch, both of whom were dead at the time of Patrick's marriage in 1855. His father was a Labourer and his mother a Maid Servant according to Patrick's marriage certificate. [See Section LH-5-1 for family background.]

I read his birthplace as Killmashulligan, Co. Sligo but have been unable to find anything to confirm this name on a map or as a townland name. However, I did come across the Parish of Kilmacshalgan in the Poor Law Union of Dromore West (on the south side of Sligo Bay).

Ann McGee was born in Shettleston, Lanarkshire on October 9, 1833 to Sarah Dunigan (c1810 - 1888) and James McGee (c1810 - 1885). Her father was a Cotton Hand Loom Weaver, later a Labourer. [See Section MG-5-1 for family background.]

1855 On Thursday, November 15, Patrick Lynch and Ann McGee were married at Dalbeth [possibly at the Convent of the Good Shepherd] after Banns in accordance with the Rites & Ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.40 at Shettleston two days later.

Patrick was a Bachelor, gave his age as 22, occupation Coalminer and present and usual address Hogganfield [less than a mile from Lightburn]. His birthplace appears to be recorded as Kilmashulligan, Co. Sligo, Ireland and his parents as Patrick Lynch, Labourer and Mary Lynch m.s. Murray, Maid Servant, both deceased.

Ann was a Spinster, aged 22, occupation Servant and present and usual address Lightburn. Her birthplace is recorded as Shettleston, Lanarkshire and her parents as James McGee, Labourer and Sarah McGee m.s. Dunigan.

The celebrant was Fr. Patrick McLaughlin, Dalbeth Cottage, Dalbeth by Glasgow and the witnesses were William Donaghey and Elizabeth Dunigan who made "her X mark".

The marriage is also recorded in the register of St. Paul's, Eastmuir —

Patk Lynch & Ann McGee, after due proclamation of Banns, were married by me in the presence of William Donachy and Elizabeth Dunigan. Patrick McLaughlin.

Unfortunately, it offers no explanation of why the marriage took place at Dalbeth rather than in the parish church.

[There is a family of Dunigans, Henry and Mary, in Shettleston with daughter Elizabeth (born about 1836) and also a son Thomas which name appears as witness at the marriage of Ann's brother Henry in 1860. Elizabeth is not Ann's first cousin but I suspect there is some family connection.]

1861 I have gone through the censuses for Shettleston and Cambuslang, and a kind person has consulted an index for the whole of Lanarkshire, without finding the family. Either they were far from home or they somehow escaped the census entirely. (cf. 1891)

1886 Daniel Lynch (Illegitimate) was born at 9h0m a.m. on Thursday, August 26 at 5 Old Rows, Newton Colliery, Cambuslang to Margaret Lynch, Dairymaid. His birth was registered No.335 at Cambuslang on September 1 by Ann Lynch, "her X mark", Grandmother (Present).

Sadly, Daniel lived only 3 weeks.

1886 Daniel Lynch, Single (Illegitimate) died at 9h0m a.m. on Wednesday, September 15 at 5 Old Rows, Newton Colliery, Cambuslang, aged 3 weeks, of Marasmus [wasting away of the body] after 21 days as certified by R. B. Macpherson, MBCM. His mother is recorded as Margaret Lynch, Dairymaid. His death was registered No.151 at Cambuslang on the same day by Patrick Lynch, "his X mark", Grandfather, Occupier.

Daniel (age 0) was buried on the following day at St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth. [Index entry]

1888 On Thursday, April 5, Margaret married Peter Farmer, Carter, at The Chapel, Alexandria. [See Section FM-7-1 for further information.]

1890 Ann Lynch, Married to Patrick Lynch, Colliery Watchman, died at 12h noon on Sunday, October 26, age 52 [she was 57], at 5 Old Rows, Newton, Cambuslang of Chronic Bronchitis, several years, Diarrhoea after 8 days as certified by John Hardie, MBCM. Her parents are recorded as James McGee, Road Surfaceman and Sarah McGee m.s. Dunnigan, both deceased. Her death was registered No.219 at Cambuslang on the following day by Patrick Lynch Junr., Son, Present.

There is an entry in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth on October 29 for the burial of Ann Lynch, mother of the owner of Lair 126, Section 11E for a fee of 14/6d. The depth of the lair is given as 8ft so I assume this was the first burial in this lair.

1891 April 6 Although all of the references I have found before and after this date give an address of 5 Old Rows, Newton, the Lynchs do not appear at that address in the census. Instead, in a house with two windowed rooms, we find —

This looks enough for two rooms but I can't find the rest of the Lynchs, even using the index. Either they were out of the country or keeping a very low profile (cf. 1861).

1891 On Thursday, June 4, Susan Lynch and Thomas O'Connell were married at St. Bride's Chapel, Cambuslang after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.53 at Cambuslang on June 4.

Thomas was a Bachelor, gave his age as 21, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence as 6 Thorniewood Rows, Uddingston, Bothwell. His parents are recorded as John O'Connell, Coal Miner and Agnes O'Connell m.s. McCabe. Thomas made "his X mark" on the official documents.

Susan was a Spinster, gave her age as 20 [she was 21], occupation Domestic Servant and usual residence as 5 Old Rows, Newton Cambuslang. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Lynch, Coal Miner and Ann Lynch m.s. McGhee, deceased.

The celebrant was Jas. F. Morrison and the witnesses were Joseph Mulvany and Sarah Farrel.

[Not in the index.]

And that is as far as it goes with these Lynchs for the time being.
