The Family of Bernard Kennedy & Jane Dickie, 1868

This is the family of Francis and John who feature elsewhere in the story.

1868 On Monday, June 8, Barnard Kennedy and Jane Marron were married at Dalry after Banns according to the Forms of the Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.30 at Dalry on June 11.

Barnard was a Bachelor, gave his age as 25, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Courthill Street, Dalry. His parents are recorded as Francis Kennedy, Coal Miner and Agnes Kennedy m.s. Small.

Jane was a Spinster, gave her age as 27, no occupation recorded and usual residence Garnock Street, Dalry. Her parents are recorded as John Marron, Farmer (deceased) and Sarah Marron m.s. Marron.

The celebrant was Daniel Conway, Catholic Clergyman and the witnesses were Barnard Gunn and Mary Ann Gunn.

Jane and Mary Ann made their marks, the Barnards apparently signed.

Which raises the question of where the Dickey (Ireland) or Dickie (Scotland) which feature in most of the birth and marriage registrations came from.

Bernard and Jane had the following children (that I know of) —

Sarah Annborn about 1866 in Ireland, married Alexander Simpson in 1882, last sighting 1882.
Mary Janeborn in 1869 in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, last sighting 1881.
Theresaborn in 1871 in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, married Henry Duffin in 1890, last sighting 1890.
Ellenborn in 1873 in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, married William McNally in 1897, last sighting 1897.
Agnesborn in 1875 in Watsonville, Motherwell, married Arthur McGarry in 1900, last sighting 1900.
Francisborn in 1879 in Watsonville, married Ellen Kelly in 1909, last sighting 1911.
Johnborn in 1881 in Watsonville, married Mary Reynolds in 1901, last sighting 1930.
Jamesborn in 1884 in Watsonville, Motherwell, last sighting 1901.

Sarah Ann may be Bernard's child from a previous relationship, or adopted.

I'm still looking for Sarah Ann, having found no-one suitable with surname Kennedy or Dickey in Ballymena 1865 - 1870. There are no registrations for any Sarah Marron in the same place and time.

Sarah married Alexander Simpson in 1882. (She claimed to be 20 so look earlier for birth and/or baptism.)

1869 Mary Jane Kennedy was born on Sunday, April 18 to Jane Kennedy m.s. Dickey and Barnett Kennedy, Labourer, Ballybollan. Her birth was registered No.194 in the District of Ahoghill in the Union of Ballymena in the County of Antrim on May 24 by Jane Kennedy, "her X mark", Mother, Ballybollan. [Group Registration ID 7899445]

I have yet to find her baptism.

There is the baptism recorded in the Parish of Ahoghill on May 28, of Teresa Kennedy, parents Bernard Kennedy and Jane McKay of Carnearney with sponsors James Nicholl and Rose McKeown. Not an exact match but close enough to be going on with.

Theresa married Henry Duffin in 1890.

1895 Bernard Kennedy, Coalminer, married to Jane Dickie, died at 7h40m a.m. on Sunday, March 17 at 41 Logans Row, Motherwell, Parish of Dalziel, age 44 years, of Spinal Sclerosis, 1 year, General Debility as certified by David Jones, M.B.C.M.
