Bernard Carroll was born about 1826 in Ireland to Mary Conolly ( - before 1860) and William Carle ( - before 1860).

Ann Dickson was born about 1828 in Ireland to Catherine (unknown) ( - ) and John Dickson, Agricultural Labourer ( - ).

Bernard and Ann had the following children (that I know of) —

Williamborn about 1846 in Ireland, last sighting 1861.
Annborn about 1849 in Rutherglen, last sighting 1861.
Bernardborn in 1856 in Rutherglen, last sighting 1887.
Elizabethborn about 1858 in New Kilpatrick, last sighting 1871.


1856 Barny Carrol was born at 10h a.m. on Monday, November 24 at 6 Wardlawhill Street, Rutherglen to Ann Carrol m.s. Dickson and Barny Carrol, Labourer in a Coal Pit. His birth was registered No.250 at Rutherglen [Burgh] on December 1 by Barny Carrol, "his X mark", Father, Present.


c1858 I haven't found a birth for Elizabeth in Dunbartonshire or Stirlingshire.


1860 Ann Carrol, Wife of a Colliery Redsman, Married, died at 4h30m p.m. on Wednesday, April 4 at Stonelaw Street, Rutherglen, age 32 years, of Cauliflower excrescence in uterus [probably a cancerous growth] after 12 months, as certified by James Gorman, Surgeon, Rutherglen who last saw the deceased on April 4. Her parents are recorded as John Dickson, Agricultural Labourer and Catherine Dickson m.s. unknown. Her death was registered No.79 at Rutherglen on April 6 by Bernard Carrol, "his X mark", Husband, Present.

She was buried in Rutherglen Churchyard as certified by Peter Thornton, Sexton.

 


The Family of Bernard Carroll & Jane Duffy, 1860

Jane Duffy was born about 1838 in New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire to Marjory Harkins ( - before 1860) and Patrick Duffie ( - before 1860).


1860 On Friday, June 29, Bernard Carrol and Jane Duffie were married in Rutherglen [St. Columbkille's] after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.46 at Rutherglen on July 6.

Bernard was a Widower, gave his age as 34, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Wardlawhill Street. His parents are recorded as William Carle [sic], Labourer and Mary Carle m.s. Conolly, both deceased.

Jane was a Spinster, gave her age as 22, occupation Worker at a Paper Mill and usual residence Main Street, Rutherglen. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Duffie, Labourer and Marjory Duffie m.s. Harkins, both deceased.

The celebrant was John Shaw, Cath. Priest, Rutherglen and the witnesses were William McColgan and John Rush.

The bride and groom made their marks, the witnesses apparently signed.

The marriage is noted in the register of St. Columbkille's. (index entry)

Bernard and Jane had the following children (that I know of) —

(2) Catherine Scanlan in 1904 and died in 1930.

Robertborn in 1876 in Crosshill, Baillieston, last sighting 1881.


1861 April 7 The family were living at 6 Wardlawhill in Rutherglen (east of Stonelaw Road) in a house with one windowed room.

We are missing Elizabeth (3), she is not in Bridgeton (644/3-5-20), but reappears in 1871.


1863 Patrick Carrol was born at 2h30m a.m. on Saturday, May 2 at Wardlawhill, Rutherglen to Jane Carrol m.s. Duffie and Bernard Carrol, Colliery Redsman who married on June 29, 1860 in Rutherglen. His birth was registered No.153 at Rutherglen on May 20 by Jane Carrol, "her X mark", Mother.


1865 Agnes Carrol was born at 2h30m p.m. on Sunday, July 30 at 8 Wardlawhill, Rutherglen to Jane Carrol m.s. Duffie and Bernard Carrol, Colliery Redsman who married on June 24 [sic], 1860 in Rutherglen. Her birth was registered No.254 at Rutherglen on August 5 by Bernard Carrol, "his X mark", Father, Present.


1871 April 2 The family were living at Reid's Land [or Row] in Crosshill, Baillieston in a house with one windowed room.

1872 Edward Carroll was born at 4h p.m. on Friday, July 26 at Reid's Row, Crofshill, Baillieston to Jane Carroll m.s. Duffie and Bernard Carroll, Brusher in Pit who married on June 25 [sic], 1860 in Rutherglen. His birth was registered No.238 at Faulds, Baillieston on August 13 by Jane Carroll, "her X mark", Mother.


1875 Robert Brown Carroll was born at 2h0m a.m. on Friday, April 9 at Reid's Land, Crosshill, Baillieston to Jane Carroll m.s. Duffy and Bernard Carroll, Coal Miner who married on June 22 [sic], 1860 in Rutherglen. His birth was registered No.145 at Swinton Cottage, Baillieston on April 27 by Jane Carroll, "her X mark", Mother.


1881 April 3 This looks like the family at 53 Newlands, Uddingston. [Today, there is a Newlands Road in Thorniewood, just west of Tannochside.]

1884 On Thursday, June 12, Agnes married Charles Leslie at St. Bridget's, Baillieston. [See Section LL-7-2 for further information.]


1887 Bernard Carroll, Coal Miner, married to 1st Ann Dickson, 2nd Jane Duffy, died at 7h30m a.m. on Saturday, March 5 at No.53 Newlands Rows, Newlands [, Uddingston] age 56 years [he was nearer 61], of Phthisis after 1 year, as certified by George Willis, Surgeon. His parents are recorded as William Carroll, Farm Labourer and ---- Carroll m.s. ----, both deceased. His death was registered No.65 at Bothwell on the same day by Bernard Carroll, "his X mark", Son, No.10 Newlands Rows, Newlands.


1891 April 5 A much reduced family was to be found living at 50 New Lands [, Uddingston] in a house with two windowed rooms. [I wonder if they have actually moved three doors down since 1881, or if the house numbering has changed.]

Patrick was a boarder with his sister Agnes and Charles Lessily [Leslie] and family in Tollcross, which leaves Bernard (34) unaccounted for.


1892 On Thursday, November 3, Patrick married Agnes McKerracher in St. Paul's R.C. Church, Shettleston. [See Section CA2-7-3 for further information.]
