The Family of William Nolan & Mary Lafferty, 1879

William Nolan was born about 1855 in Ireland to Catherine Dooras ( - ) and Peter Nolan, Farmer ( - ). He died in Cleland in 1903.

Mary Lafferty was born on Thursday, March 5, 1857 in Newarthill, Lanarkshire to Elizabeth Spiers ( - ) and James Lafferty, Coal Miner ( - ). [See Section LY2-6-1 for family background.] She died in Newarthill in 1937.


1879 On Monday, July 28, William Nolan and Mary Lavery were married at Chapelhall, Bothwell Parish [St. Aloysius?] after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.38 at Holytown on August 11.

William was a Bachelor, gave his age as 25, occupation Freestone Quarryman and usual residence Newarthill, Bothwell Parish. His parents are recorded as Peter Nolan, Farmer and Catherine Nolan m.s. Dooras.

Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 19 [she was 22], occupation Worker in a Brickfield and usual residence Auchinlee, Shotts Parish. Her parents are recorded as James Lavery, Colliery Labourer and Elizabeth Lavery m.s. Spiers.

The celebrant was William Gallagher and the witnesses were Dominick Nolan and Ellen McKenna.

Mary made "her X mark", the others signed.

His birth was registered No.34 at Cleland on May 3 by William Nolan, "his X mark", Father, Present.

Peter married Ellen Faughnan in 1903 at St. Mary's, Cleland.

Lavery and William Nolan, Quarryman who married on July 9 [sic], 1879 in Chapelhall, Holytown [District]. His birth was registered No.77 at Cleland on July 7 by William Nolan, "his X mark", Father, Present.

James married Mary Carroll in 1907 at St. Mary's, Cleland.


1884 Catherine Nolan was born at 3h20m a.m. on Sunday, January 13 at Omoa Square, Shotts Parish to Mary Nolan m.s. Lafferty and William Nolan, Quarryman who married on July 9 [sic], 1879 in Chapelhall, Holytown District. Her birth was registered No.6 at Cleland on January 17 by William Nolan, "his X mark", Father, Present.

Catherine married Denis Dowling in 1912 at St. Mary's, Cleland.


1885 William Nolan was born at 12h0m p.m. on Thursday, July 16 at Auchinlee, Shotts Parish to Mary Nolan m.s. Laveri and William Nolan, Quarryman who married on July 9 [sic], 1879 in Chapelhall. His birth was registered No.63 at Cleland on July 22 by William Nolan, "his X mark", Father, Present.


1888 Mary Nolan was born at 7h50m a.m. on Friday, May 11 at Auchinlee, Shotts Parish to Mary Nolan m.s. Lafferty and William Nolan, Quarryman who married on July 12 [sic], 1879 in Chapelhall, Holytown Dist. Her birth was registered No.27 at Cleland on March 19 by William Nolan, Father, Present.


1890 Patrick Nolan was born at 1h0m a.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at Auchinlee, Shotts Parish to Mary Nolan m.s. Lafferty and William Nolan, Quarryman who married on July 28 [hooray], 1879 in Chapelhall, Holytown Dist. His birth was registered No.36 at Cleland on Apri 29 by William Nolan, Father, Present.

Patrick married Ellen Reynolds in 1912 at St. Mary's, Cleland.

Bridget married John O'Neill in 1914 at St. Mary's, Cleland.


1895 Daniel Nolan was born at 5h0m p.m. on Sunday, May 5 at Cleland, West Dist. of Shotts to Mary Nolan m.s. Lafferty and William Nolan, Quarryman who married on July 9 [sic], 1879 in Chapelhall. His birth was registered No.58 at Cleland on May 17 by William Nolan, Father.


1901 March 31 The family were living on Scotts Row, Cleland in a house with 2 windowed rooms. There are 22 families on Scotts Row.

1903 William Nolan, Quarryman, married to Mary Lafferty, died at 6h45m a.m. on Thursday, May 28 at Johnston's Land, West Dist. of Shotts, age 41 years, of Cancer of Stomach after 4 months, as certified by George Buchan, M.D.C.M. His parents are recorded as Peter Nolan, Farmer and Catherine Nolan m.s. Douris. His death was registered No.19 at Cleland on the same day by Peter Nolan, Son, Present.


1903 On Thursday, December 31, Peter married Ellen Faughnan at St. Mary's, Cleland. [See Section NO-71-1 for further information.]


1904 William Nolan (Single) died at 12h Midnight on Wednesday, January 27 at Cleland, West Dist. of Shotts, age 16 years, of Urinary Calculus Suprapubic [kidney stone], Lithotomy [surgical procedure], Exhaustion after 3 days, as certified by John Lithgow, M.D.. His parents are recorded as William Nolan, Quarryman (deceased) and Mary Nolan m.s. Lafferty. His death was registered No.6 at Cleland on the following day by Peter Nolan, Brother, Present.

The mention of a surgical procedure may suggest that he died in hospital, rather than at home. The Cleland Hospital of that time was part of the Poorhouse, located on Bellside Road near Omoa [now Cleland] Railway Station.


1907 On Tuesday, December 31, James married Mary Carroll at St. Mary's, Cleland. [See Section NO-71-2 for further information.]


1911 April 2 The family were living at 157 Brick Building, [Omoa Road?,] Cleland in a house with one windowed room.

1912 On Friday, July 12, Patrick married Ellen Reynolds at St. Mary's, Cleland. [See Section NO-71-3 for further information]


1912 On Friday, July 12, Denis Dowling and Kate Nolan were married at the Roman Catholic Chapel, Cleland [St. Mary's] after Banns and Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.26 at Cleland on the following day.

Denis was a Bachelor, gave his age as 23, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence 35 Omoa Square. His parents are recorded as Michael Dowling, Coal Miner (deceased) and Margaret Dowling m.s. Ryan.

Kate was a Spinster, gave her age as 26 [she was 28], occupation Brick Worker and usual residence 6 Omoa Square, Cleland. Her parents are recorded as William Nolan, Quarryman (deceased) and Mary Nolan m.s. Lafferty.

The celebrant was Timothy Killiher and the witnesses were John Nash and Bridget Nolan [probably Kate's sister].


1914 On Friday, July 17, John O'Neill and Bridget Nolan were married at the Roman Catholic Chapel, Cleland [St. Mary's] after Banns and Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.23 at Cleland on July 21.

John was a Bachelor, gave his age as 22, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Pottery Building, Cleland. His parents are recorded as Joseph O'Neill, Coal Miner and Mary O'Neill m.s. McMahan.

Bridget was a Spinster, gave her age as 21, no occupation recorded and usual residence 159 Omoa Road, Cleland. Her parents are recorded as William Nolan, Quarryman (deceased) and Mary Nolan m.s. Lafferty.

The celebrant was Peter Murray and the witnesses were James Nolan and Lizzie Greenan.


1937 Mary Nolan, Widow of William Nolan, Quarry Worker, died at 9h0m p.m. on Wednesday, May 5 at 22 Carfin Road, Newarthill, age 76 years [she was 80], of Senility as certified by Wm. C. Sharp, M.B.Ch.B., D.P.H. Her parents are recorded as James Lafferty, Coal Miner and Bessie Lafferty m.s. Speirs, both deceased. Her death was registered No.74 at Holytown on the following day by Daniel Nolan, Son, Present.
