The Family of Thomas Lynch & Margaret Murphy, 1867

Thomas Lynch was born about 1837 in the Parish of Kilmacshalgan, Co. Sligo to Mary Murray (c180x - before 1855) and Patrick Lynch (c180x - before 1855). [See Section LH-5-1 for family background.]

Margaret Murphy was born about 1842 to Bridget Cavanaugh ( - ) and James Murphy, Labourer ( - ).


1867 On Friday, May 17, Thomas Lynch and Margaret Murphy were married in St. Mungo's Chapel, Glasgow After Banns according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.146 at Glasgow (District of Glasgow Central) on May 20.

Thomas was a Bachelor, he gave his age as 30, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence 25 Gallowgate, Glasgow. His parents are recorded as Patrick Lynch, Labourer and Mary Lynch m.s. Murray, both deceased.

Margaret was a Spinster, gave her age as 25, occupation Pottery Worker and usual residence 126 Garngad Road, Glasgow. Her parents are recorded as James Murphy, Labourer and Bridget Murphy m.s. Cavanaugh.

The celebrant was Fr. Raphael Gorga, St. Mungo's, Stanhope Street, Glasgow and the witnesses were Anthony Taylor and Catherine Sherlock (who made her mark).

[Note :– Stanhope Street vanished when the M8 was driven though Townhead. It was the location of the original St. Mungo's church, the present church in Parson Street opened in 1869.]

From the Register of Marriages in St. Mungo's, Townhead, Glasgow —

Thomas Lynch + Margaret Murphy were duly married by me on the 17th day of May, 1867, in presence of Anthony Taylor + Catherine Sherlock. Raphael Gorga”

Thomas and Margaret had the following children (that I know of) all born in Lightburn, Shettleston —

Jamesborn in 1868 and died three weeks later.
Johnborn in 1870 and died two days later.
Michaelborn in 1870 and died three days later.


1868 James Lynch was born at 7h0m p.m. on Monday, December 7 at Lightburn, Shettleston, Lanark to Margaret Lynch m.s. Murphy and Thomas Lynch, Coal Miner who married on May 19, 1866 [sic] in Glasgow. His birth was registered No.248 at Shettleston on December 16 by Thomas Lynch, Father.

He was baptised on December 20 in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir by Fr. Patrick McLaughlin with sponsors James Conroy and Catherine Sherlock.

Sadly, James did not live long.

1868 James Lynch (Single) died at 7h15m p.m. on Tuesday, December 29 at Lightburn, Shettleston, Lanark, age 3 weeks, of Bowel complaint, 10 days, no medical attendant. His parents are recorded as Thomas Lynch, Coal Miner and Margaret Lynch m.s. Murphy. His death was registered No.164 at Shettleston on December 31 by Thomas Lynch, "his X mark", Father, Present.

James Lynch, age 0 (4 weeks), was buried on December 31 in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth, cause of death Bowelhive [diarrhoea] and a fee of 2/-.


1870 Twins John and Michael Lynch were born at 1h30m a.m. and 2h0m a.m. respectively on Saturday, January 1 at Lightburn, Shettleston, Lanark to Margaret Lynch m.s. Murphy and Thomas Lynch, Coal Miner who married on May 17, 1867 in Glasgow. Their births were registered Nos.2 and 3 respectively at Shettleston on January 3 by Thomas Lynch, Father.

The boys were baptised on the following day in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir by Fr. Patrick McLaughlin with sponsors (for John) James Gillooly & Roseann Ivens and (for Michael) John Lynch & Ann Lynch [m.s. McGee, married to Patrick].

Sadly, they did not live long.

1870 John Lynch, Single, died at 11h40m p.m. on Monday, January 3 in Shettleston, Lanark, age 3 days, of Debility from Birth, not certified.

1870 Michael Lynch, Single, died at 8h30m p.m. on Tuesday January 4 in Shettleston, Lanark, age 4 days, of Debility, not certified.

Their deaths were registered Nos.8 (John) and 9 (Michael) at Shettleston on January 5 by Thomas Lynch, Father, Present. Their parents are recorded as Thomas Lynch, Coal Miner and Margaret Lynch m.s. Murphy.

John and Michael, age 4 days, (Twins in one coffin) were buried on January 5 in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth. The cause of death is given as Premature Birth and a fee of 2/- was charged. Unfortunately, the records at this date do not give a lair reference.


1870 Thomas Lynch, Coal Miner, Married to Margaret Murphy, died at 10h30m p.m. on Saturday January 22 in Shettleston, Lanark, age 40 years, of Typhus Fever after 10 days as certified by George R. Mather, M.D. His parents are recorded as Patrick Lynch, Gardener and Mary Lynch m.s. Murray, both deceased. His death was registered No.23 at Shettleston on January 28 by Patrick Lynch, "his X mark", Brother, residing in Lightburn, not present.

Thomas Lynch, age 40, was buried on January 29 in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth, cause of death Typhoid Fever and a fee of 5/-.


A search of the 1871 and 1881 censuses failed to turn up any likely Margaret Lynch, but if she reverted to her maiden name, then a reasonable possibility for 1881, living at 5 Back Wynd in Blythswood District, could be —

It would require a significant amount of work investigating Murphys to establish whether she is the same woman.
