The photographs of George and Hilda Shaw

135 George & Hilda

This page includes early portraits of —

Hilda's parents were James McGee and Marie Shanks who married in St Aloysius Church, Ardwick on December 3, 1903.

The early McGees

James McGee's parents were Thomas McGee and Margaret Hyslop who married in the Catholic Parish Church, Manchester on October 30, 1875.

This lady, labelled "Jim's Grandmother", was among a group of early Colvin and Rogan photographs. The most likely "Jim" is James Colvin, so why is she here? Because James Colvin's paternal grandmother died before 1851 and his maternal grandmother was also the paternal grandmother of James McGee.

So, I think this is Sarah Dunigan (born about 1811 in Girvan, Ayrshire, died 1888 in Lightburn, Shettleston) who married James McGee (born about 1811 in Co. Down, died 1885 in Lightburn) in St. Andrew's Cathedral, Glasgow on Wednesday 27 October 1830.

Among their children were Thomas, Hilda's grandfather, and Margaret who married Daniel Colvin in 1860.

There is nothing on the back of this one but I am fairly sure that it is —

Thomas McGee (born 1846 in Shettleston, now in Glasgow, died 1916 in Ardwick, Manchester) with his children (boys, from the left) –

Henry - born 1884 at 41 Wesleyan Street, Camlachie, Glasgow, died 1918 in Seine-Maritime, France,

John (Uncle Jack) - born 1882 at 41 Wesleyan Street, Camlachie, Glasgow, died 1961 in Manchester,

James - born 1879 at 39 Lower Chatham Street, Chorlton upon Medlock, Manchester, died 1944 in Longsight, Manchester,

and Sarah - born 1886 at 14 Small Street, Ardwick, Manchester.

Thomas's wife, Margaret Hyslop, died in 1891, aged 33, at 15 Woodley Street (apparently in Collyhurst - I wonder what they were doing that far north), Manchester.

The Shanks Family

Marie Shanks' parents were Richard Shanks and Rose Anna Hegan (or Hagan) who married in the Parish Church in Portsmouth on February 25, 1867.

Again, there is nothing on the back of this one but I think I can identify —

Marie (seated on the right) born 1875 in Manau, India (while her father was serving in the 68th Regiment of Foot), died in 1918 in the Royal Infirmary, Manchester, flanked by (standing)

Rosie - born 1888 at 10 Broadie Street, Ardwick, Manchester

and Lucy - born 1877 at 39 Temperance Street, Ardwick with

young Herbert - born 1893 at 10 Broadie Street, Ardwick, died 1917 in the Pas de Calais, France.

Which leaves a tentative identification for the lady on the left as Polly, about whom I know only that she may have died in 1959.

There were at least two other boys, James born 1868 at South Camp, Farnborough and Richard born 1880 at 39 Temperance Street, Ardwick and I have heard rumours of John born in the 1880s, who may have gone to Canada.

"25/8/15" "Auntie Frances"

Frances Minnie Howard married Herbert Shanks in St Chad's Catholic Church, Manchester on June 19, 1915. After Herbert's death, she remained in touch with the rest of the family and was a good friend to the McGee children.

There is nothing to identify these fine lads but the one standing fourth from the left could very well be Herbert.
