I set out to prove that Herbert was Uncle Ned's son as I had always assumed, and I failed. The only Herbert I could find anywhere near my target was the son of John Dunne and Margaret Cashen. So it looks as if Uncle Ned wasn't the only male emmigrant. It appears that John Dunne was born in Tipperary about 1854 to Edmund Dunne, Farmer, and Margaret Tobin, emigrated to Victoria about 1877 and was a Police Officer.
Margaret Cashen was born about 1854 in Co. Clare to Patrick Cashen, Farmer, and Eliza McInerney. I don't know when she emigrated but it must have been before 1878 when ....
.... John and Margaret married on February 27 in SS Peter & Paul, Emerald Hill, Melbourne. The witnesses were Bernard McGuire and Maggie Dunne. They had seven children that I know of -
Margaret died on August 1, 1908 (aged 54) and John on December 10, 1922 (aged 68).
- Edmund Patrick (born about 1879, died 1952),
- John James (1881 - 1938),
- Thomas William (1882 - ????),
- Joseph Augustus (1884 - ????),
- Elizabeth Margaret (1886 - 1964),
- Maria Agnes (died before Herbert was born) and
- Herbert (1891 - 1961).
Herbert joined the army as Herbert Patrick Cashin in February 1916 in Sydney, giving his next of kin as Miss Kathleen O'Connor of Romsey, Victoria (a small town north west of Melbourne), age 23 (he was 24) and occupation Motor Mechanic.Herbert Dunne married Kathleen Margaret O'Connor on April 12, 1916 in St Francis' RC Church, Melbourne. The witnesses were Francis Leslie Hallett and Veronica Josephine Hallett. Kathleen was born in Bellarine (a small town east of Geelong) to Thomas O'Connor, Storekeeper, and Victoria Flanagan.
Herbert Patrick Cashin sailed from Sydney on the Orsovia on July 29 and arrived in Plymouth on September 14, 1916. After time in France, he arrived in hospital in Ipswich on March 30, 1918.
Herbert Dunne signed Aunt Lena's autograph book on 25th April, 1918.
Herbert Patrick Cashin returned to duty on May 31, 27 days late, was court martialled on June 10 and got 60 days in Lewes Detention Barracks.
He rejoined his unit in France on August 21 before returning to Australia on August 6, 1919.

| I'm guessing that these two photos are Herbert Mark II since they look more 1920's than 1890s. |
|
After the war, Herbert was a policeman and had further children - Kathleen (born about 1921), Eileen (1922) and Marie (1929). The photo below has no identification but it feels Australian and might be Herbert, Kathleen and Eileen (or vice versa) in the mid 1920s.
