The Family of John Reynolds & Ellen McVey, 1888

John was born on October 17, 1860, in Eastmuir, Shettleston to Ellen Connelly (c1826 - 1896) and Patrick Reynolds (c1826 - 1882). [See Section RS-5-1 for family background.]

Ellen was (probably) born on November 19, 1862 at Omoa Iron Works, Cleland to Sarah Ann McLean (c1836 - 1867) and Daniel McVey (c1833 - 1875). [See Section MV-5-1 for (probable) family background.]

1888 On Friday, May 11 John Reynolds and Ellen McVey were married at the R.C. Chapel, Cleland [St Mary's], Shotts Parish after Banns according to the Forms of the R.C. Church. The marriage was registered No.12 at Cleland, West District of Shotts on May 15.

John was a Bachelor, gave his age as 26 [he was 27½], occupation Coalminer and usual residence Cleland, Shotts Parish. His parents are recorded as Patrick Reynolds, Coalminer (deceased) and Ellen Reynolds m.s. Connolly.

Ellen was a Spinster, age 25, occupation Brickfield Worker and usual residence Omoa Square, Shotts Parish. Her parents are recorded as Daniel McVey, Coalminer and Helen McVey, m.s. McKillop, both deceased. [Which confuses me no end as I have found only one Ellen McVey in Shotts who comes anywhere near fitting the bill and her birth certificate gives her mother as Sarah Ann McLean. I have failed to find her death registration in Scotland.]

The celebrant was John Hughes and the witnesses were Joseph Reynolds and Ellen McDermott, who married in 1890.

All parties signed the official documents (rather than made their marks).

John and Ellen had the following children (that I know of) —

Elizabethborn in 1889 in Cleland, married Francis Mellon in 1909, last sighting 1911.
Patrickborn in 1890 in Omoa Square, last sighting 1891.
Francisborn in 1892 in Omoa Square, married Bridget McBrearty in 1922, last sighting 1928.
Catherineborn in 1895 in Omoa Square, and died in 1907.

(John had further children with his second wife Annie McDermott.)

1889 Elizabeth Reynolds was born at 8h0m p.m. on Friday, March 1 at McAuley's Land, Cleland, Shotts Parish to Ellen Reynolds m.s. McVey and John Reynolds, Coalminer who married on 1888 May 11 at Cleland. Her birth was registered No.25 at Cleland (West District of Shotts) on March 15 by John Reynolds, Father.

Elizabeth married Francis Mellon in 1910.

1890 Patrick Reynolds was born at 3h30m a.m. on Tuesday, October 7 at 71 Omoa Square, Shotts Parish to Ellen Reynolds m.s. McVey and John Reynolds, Coalminer who married on May 11, 1888 at Cleland, Shotts Parish. I wonder why Patrick has become Francis. The real Francis was not born until 1892.

The boarder, Patrick McVay might be an uncle of Ellen's, as the 1881 Census shows Patrick McVey aged 50, living with his widowed sister-in-law Ann McVey [second wife of Daniel McVey whose first wife was Sarah McLean], a nephew and sundry nieces including one named Ellen.

1892 Francis Reynolds was born at 10h0m p.m. on Saturday, October 29 at 60 Omoa Square, Shotts Parish to Ellen Reynolds m.s. McVey and John Reynolds, Coal Miner who married on May 11, 1888 at Cleland, Shotts Parish. His birth was registered No.124 at Cleland (West District of Shotts) on November 15 by John Reynolds, Father.

Francis married Bridget McBrearty in 1922.

1895 Catherine Reynolds was born at 1h30m a.m. on Friday, May 10 at 28 Omoa Square, Cleland to Ellen Reynolds m.s. McVey and John Reynolds, Coalminer who married on May 11, 1888 at Cleland. Her birth was registered No.67 at Cleland (West District of Shotts) on May 29 by Ellen Reynolds, Mother.

1901 March 31 At this date, John was a widower, a boarder with his brother in law Robert Kelly (Jane is missing) at 54 Omoa Square; Elizabeth (12) was living with her presumed step-grandmother Ann McVey at 61 Omoa Square; Patrick (10), Francis (7) and Catherine (5) are all missing.

I have been unable to find Ellen's death in the index. There are two Ellens and a Helen Reynolds deaths in Edinburgh but the ages are a bit out.

1907 Catherine Reynolds (Single) died at 10h40m p.m. on Tuesday, January 22 at Omoa Square, West District of Shotts, age 11 years, of Pulmonary Phthisis as certified by A.A. Carruthers, MBChB. Her parents are recorded as John Reynolds, Coalminer and Ellen Reynolds m.s. McVey (deceased). Her death was registered No.9 at Cleland on the following day by John Reynolds, Father, Present.

The Family of John Reynolds & Annie McDermott, 1901

Annie McDermott was born about 1868 in Ireland to Ellen Tonner (c1849 - ) and Hugh McDermott, Coal Miner (c1845 - 1910). [See Section MD-5-1 for family background.]

Annie's sister Rosina married Francis Reynolds in 1889 and Ellen married Joseph Reynolds in 1890.

1901 On Friday, December 6 John Reynolds and Annie McDermott were married at the RC Chapel, Cleland [St Mary's] after Banns & Publication according to the Forms of the R.C. Church. The marriage was registered No.31 at Cleland, West District of Shotts on December 9.

John was a Widower, gave his age as 39 [he was 41], occupation Coalminer and usual residence as Omoa Square, West District of Shotts. His parents are recorded as Patrick Reynolds, Coalminer and Ellen Reynolds m.s. Connolly, both deceased.

Annie was a Widow, gave her age as 35 and usual residence [Cleland] Pottery Buildings, Parish of Holytown. Her parents are recorded as Hugh McDermott, Coalminer and Ellen McDermott, m.s. McInnes. [I don't know where that came from, every other McDermott reference has Ellen's maiden name as Ton(n)er.]

The celebrant was Fr. Patrick Haskett and the witnesses were James McGlinchey [possibly the boarder (along with John) with Robert and Jane Kelly in the 1901 census] and Mary Ann Smyth [probably John's 16 year old niece].

All parties signed the official documents (rather than made their marks).

I note that on this page of the register, both marriages feature widows and in neither case are the previous spouses' surnames mentioned.

John & Annie had the following children (that I know of), all born in Shotts Parish —

Annieborn in 1902, last sighting 1911.
Patrickborn in 1904 at Omoa Square, last sighting 1940.
Hughborn in 1906 at Omoa Road, last sighting 1911.
Sarahborn in 1908 at Omoa Square, Cleland and married James Moran in 1930.

which tallies with the 1911 census.

1902 Annie Reynolds was born at 9h30m a.m. on Sunday, September 21 at Pottery Buildings, Cleland, District of Holytown to Annie Reynolds, previously Brady m.s. McDiarmid and John Reynolds, Coalminer who married on December 6 at Cleland, Shotts. Her birth was registered No.558 at Holytown on October 11 by John Reynolds, Father, Present.

Pottery Building, Cleland registered in Holytown? The district boundary was the Tillan Burn which runs just west of Omoa Square. Cleland Pottery (1895 - 1911 or 14) was on the west bank of the burn, therefore in Holytown District despite being much closer to Cleland than to Holytown.

1904 Patrick Reynolds was born at 8h30m p.m. on Friday, April 22 at 105½ Omoa Square, West District of Shotts to Annie Reynolds m.s. McDermott and John Reynolds, Coalminer who married on December 6, 1902 [sic] at Cleland, West District of Shotts. His birth was registered No.46 at Cleland on April 25 by John Reynolds, Father, Present.

1906 Hugh Reynolds was born at 3h5m a.m. on Tuesday, October 16 at 135 Omoa Road, West District of Shotts to Annie Reynolds m.s. McDermott and John Reynolds, Coalminer who married on December 6, 1901 in the West District of Shotts. His birth was registered No.136 at Cleland on October 27 by John Reynolds, Father, Present.

1908 Sarah Reynolds was born at 11h0m p.m. on Monday, June 15 at 142 Omoa Square, Cleland to Annie Reynolds m.s. McDermott and John Reynolds, Coalminer who married on December 6, 1901 at Cleland. Her birth was registered No.103 at Cleland on July 3 by John Reynolds, Father, Present.

[All of the early registrations in the book have been re-dated as February 16, I know not the reason why.]

Francis was a Widower, gave his age as 37, occupation Pottery Worker and usual residence 37 Omoa Road, Cleland. His parents are recorded as Patrick Mellon, Barber and Bridget Mellon m.s. Kane, both deceased.

Elizabeth was a Spinster, age 20, no occupation recorded and usual residence Omoa Square, Cleland. Her parents are recorded as John Reynolds, Coalminer and Ellen Reynolds m.s. McVey.

The celebrant was Peter Murray and the witnesses were William Kelly and Ellen Reynolds [possibly cousins of Elizabeth].
