The Family of Terence McGee & Catherine Gallacher, 1841

This is the infamous Terence McGee whose alleged abstraction of two gold half-sovereigns from a letter entrusted to him to post, led to the trial in 1862 of the redoubtable Father Patrick McLaughlin for contempt of court.


1841 Terence and Catherine were married in February in Ireland according to the birth registration of Mary (1861).

Terence and Catherine had the following children (that I know of) —

Hughborn about 1847 in Ireland, last sighting 1861.
Rosannaborn in 1850 in Tollcross, Lanarkshire, last sighting 1862.
Jamesborn in 1856 in Tollcross, Lanarkshire and died there the following year, age 9 months.
Maryborn in 1861 in Tollcross, Lanarkshire, last sighting 1861.


c1847 Hugh was born in Ireland.


1850 Rosanna was born in Tollcross, Lanarkshire.


1851 March 30 Terence and family were living in Lindsey's Land, south of Main Street in the village of Tollcross.

1856 James McGee was born at 6h0m p.m. on Saturday, September 13 at Tollcross to Catherine McGee m.s. Gallacher and Terrance McGee, Stone Quarryman. His birth was registered No.185 at Shettleston.

James was baptised on the following day in St. Paul's, Eastmuir by Fr. Patrick McLaughlin with sponsors Thomas Neillan and Mary Tracy.

1857 James McGee (Single) died at 6h50m a.m. on Thursday, July 2 at Tollcrofs, Lanark, age 9 months, of Teething, 3 weeks, no medical attendant. His parents are recorded as Torrance [sic] McGee, Quarryman and Catherine McGee m.s. Gallacher. His death was registered No.63 at Shettleston on July 4 by Torrance McGee, "his X mark", Father.

He was buried in Dalbeth Cemetery as certified by John Shaw, Sexton. (not found on-line)


1861 April 7 Terence and family were living at Causeyside in the town of Tollcross, in a house with two windowed rooms and with one child at school.

1861 Mary McGee was born at 11h0m a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Tollcrofs, Lanark to Catherine McGee m.s. Gallacher and Terrance McGee, Quarryman who married in February, 1841 in Ireland. Her birth was registered No.88 at Shettleston on May 4 by Terance McGee, "his X mark", Father, Not Present.

She was baptised on May 6 in St. Paul's, Eastmuir by Fr. Patrick McLaughlin with sponsor Catherine Trainer.


1862 December 8 The trial of Terence McGhee commenced at the Justice of the Peace Court in Glasgow.

1862 December 11 A verdict of "not proven" was returned.

I have found no further mention of Terence or his family in Tollcross (or anywhere else).
