Thomas Houston was born on April 15, 1878 at Omoa Square, Cleland to Sarah Houston, m.s. Reynolds (1854 - 1891) and Cornelius Houston, Coal Miner (c1852 - 1898). [See Section HN-6-4 for family background.]

TRAGEDY AT RUTHERGLEN — FOUR CHILDREN BURNED TO DEATH

Four children were burned to death yesterday morning in a dwelling-house at 30 Stonelaw Street, Rutherglen, occupied by Samuel Gillan, miner. Three of the children were Gillan's own, and the other was his sister-in-law's daughter, who was staying with him. Mrs Gillan, it is stated, left the children in the house, which consists of only one room, and went to see a sick friend. When she returned about eleven o'clock the house was on fire, and the neighbours, whose attention had been attracted by the cries of the children, were attempting to enter the apartment. They managed with difficulty to break open the door. It was almost impossible then to go into the house owing to the density of the smoke, but the local fire brigade lent assistance and the outbreak was soon under control. The bodies of the four children were found in the room. They were terribly burned about the face, limbs, and body, and were taken to an adjoining house. The names of the children were :- John Gillan, aged 4 years and 11 months; Mary Gillan, aged 3 years; Annie Gillan, aged 17 months; and Sarah Houston, aged 13 months. It has not yet been ascertained whether they were suffocated or died from the effects of their injuries by burning. The origin of the fire is unknown.

Sarah Houston (age 1) and the Gillan children were buried on the 8th in Common Ground at St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth.
