The Family of Patrick Houston & Eliza Coogans, 1871

Patrick Houston was born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire about 1845 to Mary Haney (c1820 - 1881) and Cornelius Houston, Coal Miner (c1813 - 1870). Patrick died in 1883. [See Section HN-5-1 for family background.]

Eliza Coogans was born in Ireland about 1850 to Sarah Marrily and James Cuggans, Labourer, who was dead by the time of the 1871 Census when her family were living in a one-roomed house in Stevenson's Shop Building, Greenhead Square, Shettleston. Eliza died in 1874.

1871 On Friday, December 1, Patrick Houston and Eliza Coogans were married at Eastmuir [St. Paul's] after Banns According to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.53 at Shettleston on December 4.

Patrick was a Bachelor, he gave his age as 23 [he was nearer 26], occupation Coal Miner and usual residence McNair St., Shettleston. His parents are recorded as Cornelius Houston, Coal Miner (deceased) and Mary Houston m.s. Haney.

Eliza was a Spinster, gave her age as 22, occupation Steam Loom Weaver and usual residence Green Street, Shettleston. Her parents are recorded as James Cuggans [sic], Farm Labourer (deceased) and Sarah Cuggans m.s. Marrily.

The celebrant was Fr. G. McBrearty, Cath. Priest and the witnesses were James Coogans and Rose Lafferty. All four parties made their marks, rather than signing.

I did not see this event in the Register of Marriages in St. Paul's.

Patrick and Eliza had the following children (that I know of) —

Patrickborn in 1872 in Queenslie, Shettleston and died in 1874.
Corneliusborn in 1874 in Shettleston and died in 1874.

1872 Patrick was born at 1h0m a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, at Queensley, Shettleston to Elizabeth Houston m.s. Coogans and Patrick Houston, Coal Miner who married on December 1, 1871 at Eastmuir. His birth was registered No.191 at Shettleston on September 2 by Patrick Houston, "his X mark", Father.

He was baptised by Fr. George McBrearty in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir on September 8 with sponsors Samuel Rogers and Catherine O'Hara. His mother's name is recorded as Elizabeth Coogan.

1874 Cornelius was born at 2h30m a.m. on Sunday, March 22, at Shettleston, Lanark to Eliza Houston m.s. Coogans and Patrick Houston, Coal Miner who married on December 1, 1871 at Shettleston. His birth was registered No.89 at Shettleston on March 24 by Patrick Houston, "his X mark", Father.

He was baptised by Fr. George McBrearty in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir on the same day with sponsor Elizabeth Houston.

1874 Cornelius Houston, Single, died at 1h30m p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 at Shettleston, aged 2 days, of Debility from Birth, no medical attendant. His parents are recorded as Patrick Houston, Coal Miner and Eliza Houston m.s. Coogans. His death was registered No.46 at Shettleston on the same day by Patrick Houston, "his X mark", Father, Not Present.

1874 Eliza Houston, married to Patrick Houston, Coal Miner, died at 2h0m a.m. on Thursday, March 26 at Green Street, Shettleston, aged 23, of Jaundice after 3 days as certified by Robert Steven, Surgeon. Her parents are recorded as James Coogans, Railway Labourer (deceased) and Sarah Coogans, m.s. Marrily. Her death was registered No.47 at Shettleston on the following day by Patrick Houston, "his X mark", Widower, Present.

Eliza appears in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth for March 27. This record shows her name as Elizabeth, age 23 and cause of death as "Child Birth". She is stated to be a "Friend" of the owner of the lair No. 183, Section 4, Division E. The depth of the lair is given as 8ft which I think means that she was the first to be buried in that lair.

There is no entry in Dalbeth records for Cornelius so I assume he was buried with his mother.

1874 Patrick Houston, Single, died at 11h30m p.m. on Thursday, October 15, at Shettleston, aged 2 years and 3 months, of Croup after 4 days as certified by R. Steven, Surgeon. His parents are recorded as Patrick Houston, Coal Miner and Elizabeth Houston, m.s. Coogans, Deceased. His death was registered No.154 at Shettleston on October 17 by Cornelius Houston, Uncle, Residing at Shettleston, Present. [This would be Cornelius, husband of Sarah Reynolds, though they should have been living in Omoa Square, Cleland at this time.]

He appears in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth for October 17, aged 2 years 5 months, cause of death "Croup" with the same lair reference as his mother and a fee of 7 shillings. I have no information as to who the lair owner was.

1881 April 3 Patrick and his brother Manus were living at 21 Firpark [now Darleith] Street, Shettleston in a house with one windowed room.

1883 Patrick Houston, Coal Miner, Widower of Elizabeth Coogans died at 9h10m a.m. on Monday, April 2, aged 35 years [I think 38 would be more accurate], at Squair's Court, Shettleston of Hepatic Cirrhosis Anasarca [swelling of the body brought on by liver failure] as certified by James Houston, Surgeon. His parents are recorded as Cornelius Houston, Coal Miner and Mary Houston m.s. Hainey, both deceased. His death was registered No.55 at Shettleston on the same day by John Houston, "his X mark", Brother, Present.

There is an entry in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth - Internments in Common Ground on April 4 for the burial of Patrick Houston, aged 35 who died of Dropsy. A fee of 10 shillings was paid for the burial.

Since Manus Houston married on May 1, 1882 and in March 1883 was living in Omoa Square, Cleland near his brother Cornelius (and loads of Reynoldses) and, since Squair's Court was John Houston's address in 1891 (and the address of his widow in 1901), I suspect that John had moved there sometime after the 1881 census and Patrick was living with them at the time of his death.

Squair's Court was on the north side of the present Shettleston Road near the original parish church. I came across a Robert Squair, Master Mason employing 10 men, residing in Eastmuir in 1851 and at Squair's Land, Eastmuir in 1861.
