The Family of Edmund Dunne & Margaret Tobin, 1841

Most references to Newinn are to the Roman Catholic parish of Newinn and Knockgraffon, rather than to the village itself. Spelling varies, even within the parish registers, and when quoting, I have used whatever is there. The modern map has New Inn but a late 19th century map has Newinn and I have preferred that for general use.

Edmund Dunne — I have been unable to find a baptism for any Edmund Dunne in the records for Newinn, which start in 1820. Identification is further complicated by the existance of possibly two other Edmunds in Newinn: one, married to Mary Gleeson, producing children from 1825 and the second, married to Margaret Kennedy, producing children from 1832. [See Section DN-4-1 for details.]

It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that one of these is ours, but there is no indication of a previous marriage in the marriage record in Cashel, whereas such a detail is noted in some other records.

Margaret Tobin — There are a lot of Tobins in Newinn, and probably even more in Cashel where Margaret was living at the time of her marriage. I have therefore made no attempt to find her baptism for the time being.

Edmund and Margaret lived in a cottage at Carrigeen, a mile north of Newinn on the road to Cashel in Co. Tipperary, across the road from Rockwell College. They had a bit of land, 4 (English) acres in 1850 (Griffiths Valuation) and two fields in the 1950s, which may well still have been 4 acres.

They had the following children (that I know of) —

Bridgetbaptised in 1842
Catherinebaptised in 1844
Williambaptised in 1846, married Ellen Lyons in 1873
Marybaptised in 1848
Margaretbaptised in 1851, married Murdoch McKenzie in 1901 in Melbourne
Johnbaptised in 1853, married Margaret Cashen in 1878 in Melbourne
Edwardbaptised in 1856, married Mary Louise Gobbi in 1884 in Melbourne
Edmundbaptised in 1859

All of their children were born while Edmund and Margaret were living in Carrigeen except Bridget (Marlhill) and Margaret (Rockwell) and all of the surviving children except Billy are believed to have emigrated to the Melbourne area. I have found no marriages of Dunne women in Newinn.

1841 Edmund Dunne, New Inn, and Margaret Tobin were married in Cashel (St John the Baptist) on Saturday, May 1 with witnesses Patrick Hally and Catherine Hally.

1842 Bridget was baptised at Newinn on Friday, January 21 with sponsor Catherine Hally. Her parents are recorded as Edmund Dunne, Marlhill, and Margaret Tobin.

1844 Catherine was baptised at Newinn on Saturday, January 20 with sponsors William Dunne and Ellen Tobin. Her parents are recorded as Edmund Dunne, Carrigeen, and Margaret Tobin.

1846 William (Billy) was baptised at Newinn on Tuesday, February 10 with sponsors Patrick Hally and Catherine Fitzgerald. His parents are recorded as Edmund Dunne, Carrigeen, and Margaret Tobin.

1848 Mary was baptised at Newinn on Sunday, June 4 with sponsors Patrick Quirke and Catherine Maher. Her parents are recorded as Edmund Dunne, Carrigeen, and Margaret Tobin.

1850 In the General Valuation of Rateable Property in Ireland (usually known as Griffith's Valuation), Edward Dunne is shown as the occupier of 4 (English) acres of land with a house thereon, in the Townland of Carrigeen in the (civil) Parish of Knockgraffon, Poor Law Union of Cashel, Barony of Middlethird in County Tipperary. His immediate lessor is Robert Carew, Esq. and the net annual value of the property is given as £3-7-0d comprising £2-15-0d for land and £0-12-0d for buildings. The next entry is for a vacant house, immediate lessor Edward Dunne and net annual value £1-0-0d.

I also noticed a John Dunne occupying a house and yard in Holycross Town, Parish of Holycross rented from Michael Power, Esq. with net annual value £1-6-0d.

There are several Tobins (but no Lyons) in Boytonrath (Townland and Parish), William, Patrick and John all renting house, offices and land plus David renting just land, all from Reps. Wm. Roe, Esq.

1851 Margaret was baptised at Newinn on Monday, April 14 with sponsors Denis Dunn and Mary Kennedy. Her parents are recorded as Edmond Dunn and Margaret Tobin, Rockwell. [A Dennis Dunne was baptised in Newinn on May 3 1828, son of Edmund Dunne, Marlhill, and Mary Gleeson.]

1853 John was baptised at Newinn on Wednesday, June 29 with sponsors William Kennedy and Mary Ryan. His parents are recorded as Edmund Dunne and Margaret Tobin, Carragein. He was previously unknown to us but appears to be the father of Herbert the Warrior.

1856 Edward (Uncle Ned) was baptised at Newinn on Thursday, April 3 with sponsors Patrick & Margaret Lonergan. His parents are recorded as Edward Dunne and Margaret Tobin.

1857 Maggie should have been born about now if we believe her age (43) when she married in Melbourne. I cannot find a baptism in Newinn.

1857 Bridget Dunne and James Hogan are recorded as sponsors at the baptism of Catherine of William Tracy and Mary Cashin at Newinn on Tuesday, July 14. Our Bridget was 15 at this time, possibly a bit young, but I haven't come across any other Bridget Dunne in Newinn, though there may be many in surrounding parishes.

1859 Edmund was baptised on Friday, February 4 with sponsors John Convery and Anne Roe. His parents are recorded as Edmund Dunne and Margaret Tobin.

Edmund and Edward three years apart. Two documents for Uncle Ned in Australia (marriage and death certificates) imply that he was born about 1859. Of the two birth certificates I have obtained, one implies 1856 and the other 1859. All agree that his name is Edward. I have accepted that identification for the time being and will leave what became of Edmund to a later date.

I have no way of knowing whether any of these feature our William Dunne as there is another William Dunne in town, married to Bridget Kelly.

1865 May 15 William Dunne and Bridget Moloney were sponsors at the baptism in Newinn of Mary of Michael Hally and Catherine Cummins. (2502/3 page 44)

1871 February 7 William Dunne and Maria Heffernan were sponsors at the baptism in Newinn of William of Michael Barrett and Alice Cairns. (2502/3 page 57)

1873 January 7 William Dunne and Margaret Lyons were witnesses to the marriage in Newinn of Andrew Mahony and Charlotte Meysick. (2502/4 page 32)

1875 March 5 William Dunne and Mary Murphy were sponsors at the baptism in Newinn of Edmund of John Prendergast and Johanna Rourke. (2502/4 page 67)

1877 May 2 William Dunne and Honora Tobin were sponsors at the baptism in Newinn of John of John Muhan and Johanna Lonergan. (2502/4 page 76)

1873 Billy married Ellen Lyons. [See Section DN-6-1 for further information.]

1874 There is the death of a Margaret Dunne age 60 registered at Cashel, Quarter 2, Vol 8, Page 348.

1875 April 7 Edward Dunne is recorded as godfather to Billy's Edmund in Newinn.

1877 Approximate date for John's emigration (derived from his death certificate in Australia).

1877 There is the death of an Edmond Dunne age 60 registered at Cashel, Quarter 3, Vol 3, Page 300.

1878 On Wednesday, February 7, John married Margaret Cashen at SS. Peter & Paul, Emerald Hill [now known as South Melbourne], Victoria. [See Section DN-6-2 for further information.]

One of the witnesses to this marriage was Maggie Dunn. Our Maggie? I can't be sure from the handwriting but the other samples I have are 25-30 years later.

1879 September 7 Margaret Dunne is recorded as Godmother to Billy's Kate in Newinn, but that could have been in absentia.

1884 On Wednesday, May 14, Edward married Louisa Gobbi at St. Alipius RC Church, Oakleigh (now a suburb of Melbourne), Victoria. [See Section DN-6-3 for further information.]

Edward's death certificate implies that he emigrated in 1888, obviously wrong, but I doubt if it would be 10 years out so it looks as if he did not go out with John.

The family had started to build the "New House" beside the cottage but when the emmigrants left, this was abandoned, being no longer required. It is said that Ned and the girls took all the available money, leaving Billy with the farm.

1901 On Wednesday, July 3, Maggie Dunne married Murdoch McKenzie at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne, Victoria. [See Section MK-6-1 for further information.]

1918 April 25 Herbert (The Warrior) Dunne signed Lena's autograph book.

1918 September 1 J.C. Gobbi signed Lena's autograph book.

1919 February 2 Ed. J. McKenzie signed Lena's autograph book.

1924 Uncle Ned makes his only known visit home.
