The Family of Bernard Dunigan & Margaret Gardner, 1869

Bernard Dunigan was born about 1842 in Shettleston to Mary Smith (c1807 - 1897) and Henry Dunigan, Cotton Weaver (c1801 - 1870) and died in 1914. [See Section DG-5-2 for family background.]

Margaret Gardner was born about 1846 to Rebecca Laird ( - ) and Robert Gardner, Coal Miner ( - before 1869) and died in 1898.


1869 On Thursday, June 3, Bernard Dunigan and Margaret Gardner were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston After Banns according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.23 at Shettleston on the following day.

Bernard was a Bachelor, aged 26, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Shettleston, Lanark. His parents are recorded as Henry Dunigan, Cotton Weaver and Mary Dunigan m.s. Smith.

Margaret was a Spinster, aged 22, occupation Steamloom Weaver and usual residence Shettleston, Lanark. Her parents are recorded as Robert Gardner, Coal Miner (deceased) and Rebecca Gardner m.s. Laird.

The celebrant was P. McLaughlin, Pastor of St. Paul's Rom. Cath. Church, Eastmuir and the witnesses were Henry Dunigan [probably Bernard's brother] and Betsy Mooney. The bride and bridesmaid made their marks, the groom and best man signed.

The marriage is noted in the Register of Marriages of St. Paul's, Eastmuir.

“Bernard Dunigan + Margaret Gardiner, after due proclamation of Banns, were married by me in presence of Henry Dunigan + Betsy Mooney. Patrick McLaughlin”

Bernard and Margaret had the following children (that I know of), all born in Shettleston except where noted —

1869 Rebecca Dunigan was born at 11h30m p.m. on Thursday, October 14 at Shettleston, Lanark to Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardner and Bernard Dunigan, Coal Miner who married on June 3, 1869 at Eastmuir. Her birth was registered No. 182 at Shettleston on October 22 by Bernard Dunigan, Father.

She was baptised by Fr. Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir on October 24 with sponsors William Cannovan and Elizabeth Coogans.

Sadly, she died on April 17, 1871.


1871 Twins Mary and Sarah Dunigan were born at 5h0m a.m. and 5h30m a.m. respectively on Sunday, March 5 at Shettleston, Lanark to Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardner and Bernard Dunigan, Coal Miner who married on June 3, 1869 at Eastmuir, Shettleston. Their births were registered Nos.52 and 53 at Shettleston on March 7 by Bernard Dunigan, Father.

They were baptised in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir on March 8 with sponsors Margaret Dunigan and Mary Smith respectively. The entries are not signed, this being in the gap between Fr. McLaughlin and Fr. McBrearty.

Mary died at 1h30m p.m. on Saturday, March 18 at Shettleston, Lanark, age 13 days, of Debility from Birth, no Medical Attendant. Her death was registered No.43 at Shettleston on the same day by Margaret Dunigan, "her X mark", Mother, Present.

Sarah died at 7h30m a.m. on Friday, March 24 at Shettleston, Lanark, age 3 weeks, of Debility from Birth, Not Certified. Her death was registered No.46 at Shettleston on the following day by Bernard Dunigan, Father, Present.

1871 Rebecca Dunigan (Single) died at 0h15m p.m. on Sunday, April 16 at No.3 Green Street, Shettleston, Lanark, aged 18 months, of Bronchitis after 7 days as certified by Hugh Turner, Surgeon. Her death was registered No.58 at Shettleston on the following day by Bernard Dunigan, Father, Present.


1872 A second Rebecca Dunigan was born at 4h a.m. on Sunday, September 29 at Rosebank, Dalserf to Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardner and Bernard Dunigan, Coal Miner who married in June 1869 at Shettleston. Her birth was registered No.72 at Dalserf on September 30 by Bernard Dunigan, Father.

Rebecca married James McGuire in 1896 at St. Paul's, Shettleston.


1874 Margaret Dunigan was born at 11h a.m. on Saturday, November 14 at Rosebank, Dalserf to Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardiner and Bernard Dunigan, Coal Miner who married on June 3, 1869 at Eastmuir, Shettleston. Her birth was registered No.137 at Dalserf on November 30 by Bernard Dunigan, Father.

She was baptised by Fr. Laurence Condon in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir on December 8 with sponsor Elizabeth Donnelly. Her date of birth is given as Monday, November 30 in this record.


1876 Elizabeth Dunigan was born at 11h30m a.m. on Tuesday, November 7 at Reid Street, Shettleston, Lanark to Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardner and Bernard Dunigan, Coal Miner who married on June 3, 1869 in Shettleston Parish. Her birth was registered No.340 at Shettleston on November 14 by Bernard Dunigan, Father.

She was baptised by Fr. George McBrearty in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir on November 15 with sponsor Mrs Elizabeth McInulty [probably Bernard's sister, Elizabeth Dunigan, wife of John McNulty].


1878 A second Sarah Dunigan was born at 10h0m p.m. on Friday, November 22 at No.61 Main Street, Shettleston, Lanark to Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardner and Bernard Dunigan, Coal Miner who married on June 3, 1868 [sic] in Shettleston Parish. Her birth was registered No.287 at Shettleston on December 7 by Bernard Dunigan, Father.

She was baptised by Fr. George McBrearty in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir on December 2 with sponsors Robert McNulty and Eliza Smith.

Sarah married Moses Bradley in 1899 at St. Paul's, Shettleston.


1880 A second Mary Smith Dunigan was born at 11h0m a.m. on Monday, August 9 at Carntyne Street, Shettleston, Lanark to Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardner and Bernard Dunigan, Coal Miner who married in June 1869 in Shettleston Parish. Her birth was registered No.205 at Shettleston on the following day by Bernard Dunigan, Father.

She was baptised by Fr. George McBrearty in the parish of St. Paul's, Shettleston on August 11 with sponsor Widow Elizabeth McNulty. The entry has a note P.M. after the child's name, I have yet to find out what this means.


1881 April 3 The family were living at 61 Carntyne Street [now the west end of Old Shettleston Road] in a house with two windowed rooms.

1884 Agnes Anderson Dunigan was born at 5h0m p.m. on Friday, May 23 at 61 Carntyne Street, Shettleston to Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardener and Bernard Dunigan, Grocer who married on June 3, 1869 in Shettleston Parish. Her birth was registered No.146 at Shettleston on May 27 by Bernard Dunigan, Father.

She was baptised (as Agnes Donegan) by Fr. George McBrearty in the parish of St. Paul's, Shettleston on June 2 with sponsor Mary McNulty.


1886 Henry Dunigan was born at 0h30m p.m. on Sunday, October 17 at 2 Reid Street, Shettleston to Bernard Dunigan, Grocer and Margaret Dunigan m.s. Gardner who married on June 3, 1869 at Shettleston. His birth was registered No.351 at Shettleston on October 25 by Bernard Dunigan, Father.


1891 April 5 The family were still living at 61 Carntyne Street [now part of Old Shettleston Road] but seem to have gained an extra windowed room bringing the total to 3.

1896 On Thursday, April 9, Rebecca married James McGuire at St. Paul's, Shettleston. [See Section MA2-7-2 for further information.]


1898 Margaret Dunnigan, married to Bernard Dunnigan, Grocer (Master), died at 11h0m a.m. on Sunday, June 19 at 2 Reid Street, Shettleston, age 49 years, of Cardiac Disease, 1 year, Cerebral Embolism as certified by R. Anderson, M.D. Her parents are recorded as Robert Gardner, Coal Miner and Rebecca Gardner m.s. Laird, both deceased. Her death was registered No.132 at Shettleston on the following day by James McGuire, Son-in-Law, Present.

Margaret was buried on the 21st in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth, age 49, cause of death Heart Disease. She is recorded as the wife of the owner (Title 3069) of Lair 82, Section 11, Division E, no depth stated. A fee of 14/6d was charged.


1899 On Friday, April 28, Moses Bradley and Sarah Dunigan were married at St. Paul's R.C. Church, Shettleston after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.32 at Shettleston on May 1.

Moses was a Bachelor, gave his age as 21, occupation Engineer's Machineman and usual residence 29 Chapelle Terrace, Parkhead, Glasgow. His parents are recorded as Hugh Bradley, Iron Puddler and Bridget Bradley m.s. Hearty, both deceased.

Sarah was a Spinster, age 20, occupation Weaving Factory Worker and usual residence 2 Reid Street, Shettleston. Her parents are recorded as Bernard Dunnigan [sic], Grocer and Maggie Dunnigan m.s. Gardner (deceased).

The celebrant was Patrick Gaule, R.C.C. and the witnesses were Thomas Bradley and Mary Dunnigan [probably Sarah's sister].


1901 March 31 The family were living at 2 Reid Street [a short street off the north side of Old Shettleston Road between Carntynehall Road and Duror Street, renamed Dinnet Street and since demolished] in a house with two windowed rooms. (8 families share this address.)

1914 Bernard Dunigan, Coal Miner, Widower of Margaret Gardner, died at 11h55m p.m. on Friday, May 29 at 92 Main Street, Shettleston, Glasgow, age 71 years, of Cerebral Haemorrhage, as certified by David Thomas, M.D. His parents are recorded as Henry Dunigan, Handloom Weaver and Mary Dunigan m.s. Smith, both deceased. His death was registered No.163 at Glasgow [Shettleston District] on June 1 by James McGuire, Son in Law, Present.

Bernard was buried on June 1st with his wife, Margaret, in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth, age 71, cause of death Hemmorage. He is recorded as the owner (Title 3069) of Lair 82, Section 11, Division E and was not the first burial in this lair. A fee of 14/6d was charged.
