The Family of James McFadyen & Mary Havlin, 1872

James McFadyen was born about 1839 in Ireland to Harriet Docherty ( - after 1872) and John McFadyn, Farmer ( - before 1872).

Mary Havlin was born in September, 1851 at Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross to Mary Ann Kean (c1811 - before 1891) and Patrick Havlin, Iron Worker (c1822 - after 1891). [See Section HV-5-1 for family background.]


1872 On Thursday, November 28, James McFadyn [sic] and Mary Havelin were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston [St. Paul's] after Banns according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.67 at Shettleston on November 30.

James was a Bachelor, gave his age as 23, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Calton [now Dalness] Street, Tollcross, Lanark. His parents are recorded as John McFadyn, Farmer (deceased) and Harriet McFadyn m.s. Docherty.

Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 19 [she should have admitted to 21 if she was born in September 1851], occupation Steam Loom Weaver and usual residence Clyde Iron Works, Old Monkland Parish. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Havelin, Furnaceman and Mary Ann Havelin m.s. McKean [sic].

The celebrant was Fr. G. McBrearty, Cath. Clergyman and the witnesses were Patrick Brady and Ann Brady.

James and Mary both made their marks, the witnesses apparently signed.

The marriage is noted in the Register of Marriages in St. Paul's.

James and Mary had the following children (that I know of) —

Maryborn in 1874 at Clyde Iron Works, last sighting 1891.
Annborn about 1878 in Old Monkland and died in 1881.
Sarahborn in 1880 at John Street, Tollcross, last sighting 1891.
Jamesborn about 1883 at 10 Graham Street, Tollcross, last sighting 1891.
Patrickborn in 1885 at 12 Graham Street, Tollcross, last sighting 1891.


1874 Mary McFadyen was born at 8h p.m. on Sunday, June 7 at Clyde Iron Works to Mary McFadyen m.s. Havelin and James McFadyen, Reddsman who married in November, 1872 at Eastmuir, Shettleston. Her birth was registered No.207 at Baillieston on June 13 by James McFadyen, "his X mark", Father, Present.

She was baptised in June in the parish of St. Paul's, Shettleston. [Index entry]


c1878 Ann was born. I haven't found a reasonable birth registration or baptism in either index. (She is not Ann McFadyen registered in Airdrie (651/1-571)).

Ann died in 1881.


1880 Sarah McFadyen was born at 4h30m a.m. on Thursday, July 29 at John Street, Tollcross to Mary McFadyen m.s. Halyland and James McFadyen, Coal Miner who married on November 28, 1873 [sic] in Shettleston Parish. Her birth was registered No.204 at Shettleston on August 9 by James McFadyen, "his X mark", Father.

She was baptised in August in the parish of St. Paul's, Shettleston. [Index entry]


1881 April 3 The family were living at 11 John [later Battleburn, disappeared circa 1970] Street, Tollcross in a house with one windowed room. (8 families share this address.)

1881 Annie McFadyen (Single) died at 7h0m p.m. on Thursday, May 5 at John Street, Tollcross, Lanark, age 3 years, of Phthisis Pulmonalis as certified by Alexr. Scott, M.B.C.M. Her parents are recorded as James McFadyen, Coal Miner and Mary McFadyen m.s. Havelon. Her death was registered No.67 at Shettleston on the following day by James McFadyen, "his X mark", Father, Present.


1883 James McFadyen was born at 2h30m a.m. on Tuesday, January 30 at 11 John Street, Tollcross to Mary McFadyen m.s. Havlin and James McFadyen, Coal Miner who married in November, 1872 in Shettleston. His birth was registered No.40 at Shettleston on February 15 by James McFadyen, "his X mark", Father.


1885 Patrick McFadyen was born at 8h30m p.m. on Sunday, April 5 at 10 Graham Street, Tollcross to Mary McFadyen m.s. Harper [sic] and James McFadyen, Coal Miner who married on November 28, 1872 in Shettleston. His birth was registered No.78 at Shettleston on April 8 by James McFadyen, "his X mark", Father.


1886 James McFadyen, Coal Miner, Married to Mary Havlan died [no time recorded] on Friday, October 8 at Gateside Pit, Cambuslang (Usual address 12 Graham Street, Tollcrofs), age 35 years, of a Fall of Coal, Instantaneous death, Not certified. His parents are recorded as James McFadyen, General labourer and Mary McFadyen m.s. Docherty, both deceased. His death was registered No.162 at Cambuslang on the following day by Charles Dawson, Brother-in-law, Dunlop Street, Tollcrofs.

There is further information in the Register of Corrected Entries for the Parish of Cambuslang in the County of Lanark, Volume 1, Page 198.

"The following report of result of a Precognition [Scots Law - preliminary examination of witnesses as to whether there is ground for prosecution] has been received touching the death of James McFadyen registered under No.162 in the Register Book of Deaths for the year 1886:-

James Hayes was born about 1863 in Airdrie to Bridget Callaghan ( - ) and Francis Hayes, Coal Miner ( - ).

Mary Havlin was born in September, 1851 at Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross to Mary Ann Kean (c1811 - before 1891) and Patrick Havlin, Iron Worker (c1822 - after 1891). [See above for previous marriage.]


1888 On Monday, November 19, James Hayes and Mary Havlin or McFadyn were married at St. Paul's R.C. Church, Shettleston after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.59 at Shettleston on November 22.

James was a Bachelor, gave his age as 22, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Chapel Park, Cambuslang. His parents are recorded as Francis Hayes, Coal Miner and Bridget Hayes m.s. Callaghan.

Mary was a Widow, gave her age as 33, no occupation recorded and usual residence 10 Graham Street, Tollcross, Shettleston. Her parents are recorded as Patrick Havlin, Furnaceman and Mary Havlin m.s. Cane, deceased.

The celebrant was Joseph Van Hecke and the witnesses were John Burns and Mary Burns.

The witnesses made their marks, the bride and groom signed.


1889 Francis Hayes was born at 3h40m p.m. on Tuesday, October 1 at 12 Graham Street, Tollcross to Mary Hayes, previously McFadyen, m.s. Havlin and James Hayes, Coal Miner who married on November 19, 1888 in Shettleston. His birth was registered No.318 at Shettleston on October 7 by James Hayes, Father, Present.


1891 April 5 The family were living at 12 Graham [now Eversley] Street, Tollcross in a house with two windowed room. (5 families share this address.)

1891 Annie Hayes was born at 11h30m p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 at 12 Graham Street, Tollcross to Mary Hayes, previously McFadyen, m.s. Havlin and James Hayes, Insurance Collector who married on November 20, 1888 in Shettleston. Her birth was registered No.143 at Shettleston on April 21 by James Hayes, Father, Present.

Sadly, Annie lived only 20 months.

1892 Annie Hayes (Single) died at 6h40m p.m. on Thursday, December 8 at 12 Graham Street, Tollcross, age 18 months, of Diphtheria after 4 days, as certified by Alexander Scott, M.D. Her parents are recorded as James Hayes, Insurance Agent and Mary Hayes, formerly McFadyen m.s. Havelan. Her death was registered No.212 at Shettleston on the following day by James Hayes, Father, Present.
