The Family of Joseph Houston & Catherine Ferrie, 1900

Joseph Houston was born on Thursday, February 5, 1880 at Loading Bank, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire to Sarah Reynolds (1854 - 1891) and Cornelius Houston, Coal Miner (c1852 - 1898). [See Section HN-6-4 for family background.]

Catherine Ferrie was born on Thursday, October 11, 1877 at Blairdardie, Dunbartonshire to Jane Cairns (c1849 - before 1900) and Daniel Ferrie, Coal Miner (c1849 - after 1901).

1872 On Thursday, October 24, Daniel Ferrie and Jane Cairns were married at Duntocher in the Parish of Old Kilpatrick [St. Mary's] after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.29 at Old Kilpatrick on the 26th.

Daniel was a Bachelor, gave his age as 23, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Blairdardie, Parish of New Monkland. His parents are recorded as Patrick Ferrie, Coal Miner and Catherine Ferrie m.s. Wilkie.

Jane was a Spinster, gave her age as 23, occupation Farm Worker and usual residence also Blairdardie, Parish of New Kilpatrick. Her parents are recorded as Thomas Cairns, Coal Miner (deceased) and Ellen Cairns m.s. Tolmie.

The celebrant was Fr. Francis Dancher, C.C. and the witnesses were Patrick Ferrie, "his X mark" [probably Daniel's brother] and Mary Ann Cairns [probably Jane's sister].

1877 Catherine Ferrie was born at 10h45m p.m. on Thursday, October 11 at Blairdardie, Parish of New Kilpatrick to Jane Ferrie m.s. Cairns and Daniel Ferrie, Coal Miner who married on October 24, 1872 at Dunbarton. Her birth was registered No.304 at New Kilpatrick on October 27 by Daniel Ferrie, Father, Not Present.


1900 On Friday, November 9, Joseph Houston and Catherine Ferrie were married in The Roman Catholic Chapel, Uddingston [St. John the Baptist] after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.106 at Uddingston on the same day.

Joseph was a Bachelor age 20, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence 11 Croftbank Street, Uddingston. His parents are recorded as Cornelius Houston, Coal Miner and Sarah Houston m.s. Reynolds, both deceased.

Catherine was a Spinster, gave her age as 22, occupation Paper Mill Worker and usual residence 9 Croftbank Street, Uddingston. Her parents are recorded as Donald [sic] Ferrie, Coal Miner and Jeanie Ferrie m.s. Cairns (deceased).

The celebrant was Fr. Arthur Beyaert, R.C. Clergyman and the witnesses were Richard Geoghans and Ellen Ferrie [probably Catherine's sister].

Joseph and Catherine had the following children (that I know of) —

Sarahborn in 1902 in Maryhill, Glasgow and died there in 1903 aged 7 months.
Josephborn in 1904 in Maryhill, Glasgow, last sighting 1911.
Jeanieborn in 1907 in Bishopbriggs, last sighting 1911.
Thomasborn in 1908 in Bishopbriggs, last sighting 1911.
Francisborn in 1910 in Bishopbriggs and died there the same year aged 10 weeks.
plus 2 others who died before 1911.

which tallies with the 1911 census count.


1901 March 31 Joseph and Catherine were living with Catherine's family in Croftbank Street, Uddingston in a house with 2 windowed rooms. Joseph's sister Ellen was also in residence.

1902 Sarah Houston was born at 9h0m a.m. on Friday, August 29 at 264 Main Street, Maryhill, Glasgow to Catherine Houston m.s. Ferrie and Joseph Houston, Coal Miner who married on September 6 [sic], 1900 at Uddingston. Her birth was registered No.1262 at Maryhill on September 5 by Joseph Houston, Father.

She was baptised on September 7 by Fr. William Ahern in the parish of The Immaculate Conception, Maryhill with sponsors Richard Geoghan and Jeanie Ferrie.

Sadly, Sarah did not live long.

1903 Sarah Houston (Single) died at 10h0m a.m. on Tuesday, April 21 at 14 Reid Street, Maryhill, Glasgow, age 7 months, of Marasmus, 2 months 2 days, as certified by Alex Hay, MD. Her parents are recorded as Joseph Houston, Coal Miner and Catherine Houston m.s. Ferrie. Her death was registered No.259 at Maryhill on the same day by Joseph Houston, Father, Present.


1904 Joseph Houston was born at 2h40m a.m. on Sunday, January 10 at 200 Main Street, Maryhill, Glasgow to Catherine Houston m.s. Ferrie and Joseph Houston, Coal Miner who married on September [sic] 9, 1900 at Uddingston. His birth was registered No.59 at Maryhill on January 12 by Joseph Houston, Father.


1907 Jeanie Houston was born at 10h30m a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at 180 Jellyfield Cottages to Catherine Houston m.s. Ferrie and Joseph Houston, Iron Miner who married on November 1 [sic], 1900 at Uddingston. Her birth was registered No.63 at Bishopbriggs [District of Cadder West] on April 29 by Joseph Houston, Father.


1908 Thomas Houston was born at 9h30m p.m. on Tuesday, December 8 at 106 Jellyfield Cottages to Catherine Houston m.s. Ferrie and Joseph Houston, Iron Miner who married on November 9, 1900 in the District of Bothwell. His birth was registered No.145 at Bishopbriggs on the following day by Joseph Houston, Father.


1910 Francis Houston was born at 0h15m a.m. on Sunday, March 27 at 106 Jellyhill Cottages to Catherine Houston m.s. Ferrie and Joseph Houston, Ironstone Miner who married on September [sic] 9, 1900 at Uddingston. His birth was registered No.36 at Bishopbriggs on March 31 by Joseph Houston, Father.

Sadly, Francis did not live long.

1910 Francis Houston (Single) died at 8h0m a.m. on Tuesday, June 7 at 106 Jellyfield Cottages, age 10 weeks, of Gastro-enteritis, 1 month, as certified by Jas.B. Miller, MD. His parents are recorded as Joseph Houston, Ironstone Miner and Catherine Houston m.s. Ferrie. His death was registered No.36 at Bishopbriggs on the same day by Joseph Houston, Father, Present.


1911 April 2 The family were living at 106 Jellyhill Road [or Row?] on the north side of Bishopbriggs [Cadder West district] in a house with two windowed rooms.

Joseph and Catherine had been married for 10 years and produced 7 children of whom 3 were still living, the exceptions being Sarah (1902 - 1903), Francis (1910) plus two others.
