1881 On Monday, May 2, John Heyburn and Mary Jane McAuley were married at St. Patrick's, Coatbridge after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.58 at Coatbridge on May 5.

John was a Widower, gave his age as 43, occupation Iron Works Labourer and usual residence No.2 Jackson's Land, Low Coats. His parents are recorded as Francis Heyburn, Army Pensioner (deceased) and Elizabeth Hart, previously Heyburn m.s. Dale.

Mary Jane was a Spinster, gave her age as 22, occupation Domestic Servant and usual residence also No.2 Jackson's Land, Low Coats. Her parents are recorded as John McAuley, Iron Work Labourer (deceased) and Jane McMarey previously McAuley m.s. McGuinness.

The celebrant was Michael O'Keeffe, C.C. and the witnesses were James McCabe and Maggie Mooney.


1881 James Heyburn was born at 7h0m p.m. on Friday, August 5 at Jackson's Land, Laigh Coats to Mary Jane Heyburn m.s. McAulay and John Heyburn, Works Labourer who married in January 1881 at Coatbridge. His birth was registered No.261 at Coatbridge on August 22 by John Heyburn, Father, Present.


1891 April 5 The family were living at 5 Coats Street, Coatbridge in a house with one windowed room.

1901 March 31 James has branched out on his own and is a boarder (lodger scored out) with a McDermott family (as yet unconnected with our McDermotts) at 65 Omoa Square, Cleland in a house with one windowed room.

The Family of James Heyburn & Mary Ann Reynolds, 1905

James Heyburn was born on August 5, 1881 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire to Mary Jane McAulay (c1859 - ) and John Heyburn (c1838 - ). [See above for family background.] He died in 1969.

Mary Ann Reynolds was born on June 16,1884 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire to Catherine Hillon (c1862 - 1889) and William Reynolds, Coal Miner (1850 - 1920). She died in 1916. [See Section RS-6-2 for family background.]


1905 On Friday, June 30, James Heyburn and Mary Ann Reynolds were married at the R.C. Chapel, Cleland [St Mary's], West District of Shotts after Banns and Publication according to the Forms of the R.C. Church. The marriage was registered No.15 at Cleland on July 1.

James was a Bachelor, age 23, occupation Coalminer and usual address Omoa Square, West District of Shotts. His parents are recorded as John Hayburn [sic] and Mary Jane Hayburn m.s. Mullen. [All other references have Mary Jane's surname as McAuley.]

Mary Ann was a Spinster, age 21, no occupation recorded and usual address also Omoa Square, West District of Shotts. Her parents are recorded as William Reynolds, Coal Miner and Catherine Reynolds m.s. Hillin (deceased).

The celebrant was Robert Paterson and the witnesses were Francis Smyth and Mary Smyth [probably Mary Ann's cousins].

James and Mary Ann had the following children (that I know of) —

William (1)born in 1907 in Omoa Square, Cleland and died the following day.
Catherineborn in 1910 in Omoa Road, Cleland and died the following day.
Francisborn in 1914 in Carrick Vale, Cleland and died in 1915 aged 10 months.
William (2)born in 1916 in Carrick Vale, Cleland and died the same year aged 4 months.

James had further children with his second wife Grace Docherty Kelly.


1907 William Hepburn was born at 3h0m a.m. on Friday, April 5 at 95 Omoa Square, West District of Shotts to Mary Ann Hepburn m.s. Reynolds and James Hepburn, Coalminer who married on June 30, 1905 in the West District of Shotts. His birth was registered No.42 at Cleland on the following day by James Hepburn, Father, Present.

Sadly, William did not live long.

1907 William Hepburn (Single) died at 1h0m p.m. on Friday, April 6 at 95 Omoa square, West District of Shotts, age 21 hours [sic], of Premature Birth as certified by John Lithgow, M.D. His parents are recorded as James Hepburn, Coalminer and Mary Ann Hepburn m.s. Reynolds. His death was registered No.31 at Cleland on the same day by James Heyburn, Father.


1910 Catherine Hayburn was born at 9h15m a.m. on Thursday, June 23 at Omoa Road, Cleland to Mary Ann Hayburn m.s. Reynolds and James Hayburn, Coalminer who married on June 30, 1905 at Cleland. Her birth was registered No.100 at Cleland on the following day by James Hayburn, Father, Present.

Sadly, Catherine lived less than 24 hours.

1910 Catherine Hayburn (Single) died at 9h0m a.m. on Friday, June 24 at Omoa Road, Cleland, age 1 day, of Debility from Birth after 1 day, as certified by Geo Hugh Logan, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as James Hayburn, Coalminer and Mary Ann Hayburn m.s. Reynolds. Her death was registered No.59 at Cleland on the same day by James Hayburn, Father, Present.


1911 April 2 James and Mary Ann were living at 73 Omoa Road, Cleland in a house with one windowed room.

Sadly, Francis did not reach his first birthday.

1915 Francis Heyburn (Single) died at 8h50m a.m. on Saturday, July 24 at Carrick Vale, Cleland, age 10 months, of Weeping Oedema 2 months, Convulsion Syncope, as certified by W. Bannatyne, L.R.C.P.S. His parents are recorded as James Heyburn, Coal Miner (Private, No.2 Coy. Highland Light Infantry) and Mary Ann Heyburn m.s. Reynolds. His death was registered No.52 at Cleland on the same day by James Heyburn, Father, Present.


1916 A second William Heyburn was born at 10h0m a.m. on Tuesday, May 30 at Carrick Vale, Omoa Road, Cleland to Mary Ann Heyburn m.s. Reynolds and James Heyburn, Coal Miner who married on June 30, 1905 in Cleland. His birth was registered No.65 at Cleland on the same day by James Heyburn, Father, Present.

Sadly, William died a few months later.


1916 Mary Ann Heyburn, married to James Heyburn, Coal Miner died at 7h0m p.m. on Wednesday, July 5 at Carrick-Vale, Cleland, age 32 years, of Acute Pulmonary Tuberculosis after 2 months, as certified by Geo. Hugh Logan, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as William Reynolds, Coal Miner and Catherine Reynolds m.s. Hillen. Her death was registered No.37 at Cleland on the following day by James Heyburn, Widower, Present.


1916 William Heyburn (Single) died at 7h50m p.m. on Tuesday, October 17 at Carrick Vale, Cleland, age 4 months, of Marasmus as certified by Geo. Hugh Logan, M.B.Ch.B. His parents are recorded as James Heyburn, Coal Miner and Mary Ann Heyburn m.s. Reynolds (deceased). His death was registered No.53 at Cleland on the following day by James Heyburn, Father, Present.

1922 On Friday, February 10, Grace Kelly or Wardlaw and James Heyburn were married at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Chapel, Cleland after Publication according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.12 at Cleland on February 13.

James was a Widower, gave his age as 39, occupation Coal Miner and usual address 147 Omoa Road, Cleland. His parents are recorded as John Heyburn, Iron Worker and Mary Jane Heyburn m.s. McAuley, both deceased.

Grace was a Widow, age 27, no occupation recorded and usual address 122 Omoa Road, Cleland. Her parents are recorded as Robert Kelly, Coal Miner (deceased) and Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds.

The celebrant was Thomas Doyle, R.C. Clergyman and the witnesses were John Kelly, Ravenshall Cottages, Cleland [probably Grace's brother] and Maria McNally, Tara Hill Cottage, Cleland [probably Grace's 23 year old niece, daughter of Ellen and Thomas McInally].

1926 Jane Heyburn was born at 9h30m p.m. on Saturday, April 24 at 122 Omoa Road, Cleland to Grace Heyburn previously Wardlaw m.s. Kelly and James Heyburn, Coal Miner who married on February 10, 1922 at Cleland. Her birth was registered No.48 at Cleland on April 26 by James Heyburn, Father, Present.

She married David Gilchrist.


1929 Margaret Heyburn was born at 2h30m a.m. on Tuesday, January 22 at 122 Omoa Road, Cleland to Grace Heyburn previously Wardlaw m.s. Kelly and James Heyburn, Coal Miner who married on February 10, 1922 at Cleland. Her birth was registered No.9 at Cleland on the same day by James Heyburn, Father, Present.

She married Johnny Marshall.


1932 Ellen Theresa Heyburn was born at 2h0m a.m, on Friday, 28 October at 122 Omoa Road, Cleland to Grace Heyburn previously Wardlaw m.s. Kelly and James Heyburn, Coal Miner (Hewer) who married on February 10, 1922 at Cleland. Her birth was registered No.65 at Cleland on the same day by James Heyburn, Father, Present.

She married Charlie Lavery.


1961 Grace Docherty Heyburn, Married to 1st Charles Wardlaw, Coal Miner (Brusher), 2nd James Heyburn, Coal Miner (Brusher) died at 9h0m a.m. on Sunday, February 5 at 75 Gorsehall Streeet, Cleland, age 66 years, of Myocarditis - Chronic 1 year, Bronchitis 1 month, Gastritis 3 days, Acute Cardiac Failure as certified by Joseph McSevich, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as Robert Kelly, Coal Miner, Coal Miner and Jane Kelly m.s. Reynolds, both deceased. Her death was registered No.44 at Cleland on the following day by C. Lavery, Son-in-law, 16 Scarhill Street, Cleland.


1969 James Heyburn, Coalminer (Brusher) Retired, Date of Birth August 5, 1881, age 88 years, Widower of (1) Mary Ann Reynolds (2)Grace Kelly or Wardlaw, was found dead at 8h35m a.m. on Monday, December 15 at 16 Scarhill Street, Cleland. The cause of death is recorded as I(a) Coronary Thrombosis, II Carcinoma of Rectum, as certified by Anthony J.M. Donnachie, M.B.Ch.B. His parents are recorded as John Heyburn, General Labourer and Mary Jane Heyburn m.s. McAuley, both deceased. His death was registered No.991 in the District of Motherwell and Wishaw (628) on the same day by C. Lavery, Brother-in-law [sic].
