1867 On Friday, November 1, James Gribben and Sarah McMauchan were married at St Mary's Chapel [Calton], Glasgow after Banns according to the Forms of the Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.350 at Glasgow on November 4.

James was a Bachelor, gave his age as 22, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence 33 Green Street, Glasgow. His parents are recorded as James Gribben, Coal Miner and Jane Gribben m.s. Brown.

Sarah was a Spinster, gave her age as 21, occupation Yarn Winder and usual residence 33 Green Street, Glasgow. Her parents are recorded as Patrick McMahon [sic], Labourer and Jane McMahon m.s. Reid, deceased.

The celebrant was M. Wyld-----gin or Nyld-----gin and the witnesses were John McAllister and Mary Hayburn.

James and John signed, Sarah and Mary made their marks.


1871 April 2 The family were living in Townhead Street, Stevenston, Ayrshire in a house with one windowed room.

James Gribbin was born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire on April 2, 1874 to Sarah McMahon (c1847 - ) and James Gribben (c1844 - ). [See above for family background]

Elizabeth Houston was born in 1875 in Dalry, Ayrshire. [See Section MP-5-1 for probable family background.]


1898 On Wednesday, April 13, James Gribbin and Elizabeth Houston were married at St Paul's RC Chapel, Shettleston After Publication according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.35 at Shettleston.

James was a Bachelor, gave his age as 23 [he'd just turned 24], occupation Spirit Salesman and usual residence 49 Main Street, Shettleston. His parents are recorded as James Gribbin, Coal Miner and Sarah Gribbin m.s. McMahon.

Elizabeth was a Spinster, gave her age as 22, occupation Power Loom Weaver and usual residence 2 Squairs Court, Eastmuir, Shettleston. Her parents are recorded as John Houston, Coal Miner and Catherine Houston m.s. Murphy. [Squair's Court was between Nos.35 & 63 Eastmuir Street.]

The celebrant was Patrick Gaule, R.C.C. and the witnesses were Daniel Brady and Mary Watson. [Who might be the 21 year old daughter of Mary, an older sister of Ellen Connelly who married William Reynolds in 1890.]


1902 Catherine Rita Murphy Gribbin was born at 7h55m a.m. on Thursday, July 24 at 55 Graham Square, Johnstone to Elizabeth Gribbin m.s. Houston and James Gribbin, Spirit Salesman who married on April 11, 1898 at Shettleston. Her birth was registered No.292 at Johnstone, Renfrew on August 6 by James Gribbin, Father.

Catherine went on to achieve fame as the actress Renee Houston, initially working in music hall with her younger sister Billie as the “Houston Sisters”, progressing to films and the BBC radio programme “The Petticoat Line” [which I used to listen to in my bedsit in London in the early ’70s].
