The Family of Thomas Dobbin & Ellen Connelly, 1881

Thomas Dobbin was born about 1854 in Ireland to Agnes McArlene or McIllane who died sometime between Thomas's marriage in 1881 and death in 1889, and John Dobbin, Mason (Journeyman) who died before Thomas's marriage.

1881 April 3 This appears to be Thomas, a lodger at Kerr's Land, Tighnabruaich in the Parish of Kilfinan in the County of Argyll.

Ellen Connelly was born on August 7, 1854 in Shettleston. Lanarkshire to John Connelly, Coal Miner (c1822 - 1869) and Ellen Benson (c1822 - 1881). [See Section CN-5-1 for family background.]


1881 On Monday, August 29, Thomas Dobbin and Ellen Connelly were married at Eastmuir RC Chapel [St. Paul's]. The marriage was registered No.43 at Shettleston on the following day.

Thomas gave his age as 27, occupation Mason Journeyman and usual residence Main Street, Shettleston. His parents are recorded as John Dobbin, Mason (deceased) and Nancy Dobbin m.s. McArlene. Thomas made "his X mark".

Ellen gave her age as 24, occupation Steam Loom Weaver and usual residence Eastmuir, Shettleston. Her parents are recorded as John Connelly, Coal Miner (deceased) and Helen Connelly m.s. Benson. Ellen signed her name.

The celebrant was Fr. G McBrearty and the witnesses were Patrick J Hunt and Agnes Barret who made "her X mark".

The marriage is recorded in the Register of Marriages in St Paul's with Ellen as Helen Connolly and witness Patrick James Hunt.


1882 John Dobbin was born at 4h0m on October 4 at 42 Westerton Place, Parkhead, Glasgow to Thomas Dobbin, Mason (Journeyman) and Helen Dobbin m.s. Connelly who married on August 29, 1881 at Shettleston. His birth was registered No.1397 at Glasgow (District of Camlachie) on October 24 by Ellen Dobbin, Mother.

John married Julia McGhee in 1906.


1886 Thomas Dobbin was born at 5h15m p.m. on Sunday, April 18 at 42 Ravel Row, Westmuir, Glasgow to Thomas Dobbin, Mason (Journeyman) and Helen Dobbin m.s. Connelly who married on August 29, 1881 at Shettleston. His birth was registered No.560 at Glasgow (District of Camlachie) on April 9 by Thomas Dobbin, Father.

Sadly, Thomas lived only four and a half hours.

1886 Thomas Dobbin, Single, died at 9h45m p.m. on Sunday, April 18 at 42 Ravel Row, Westmuir, Glasgow, aged 4 hours, of Debility from Birth, no qualified medical attendant. His parents are recorded as Thomas Dobbin, Mason (Journeyman) and Helen Dobbin m.s. Connelly. His death was registered No.304 at Glasgow (District of Camlachie) on April 19 by Thomas Dobbin, Father, Present.

There is an entry in the records of St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth - Internments in Common Ground for April 19 for the burial of Thomas Dobbin, aged 6 hours, cause of death Debility and a fee of five shillings.


1889 Thomas Dobin, Mason (Journeyman) Married to Helen Connolly died at 11h0m a.m. on Saturday, June 22 at McNair Street, Shettleston, aged 35 years, of Phthisis Pulmonalis, 14 days, as certified by Alexander Scott, MD. His parents are recorded as John Dobin, Mason (Journeyman) and Agnes Dobin m.s. McIllane, both deceased. His death was registered No.106 at Shettleston on the same day by Edward Connelly, Brother in Law, Main Street, Shettleston.

Thomas Dobbin, age 35 years was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth on the 24th, in Lair 98, Section 4E (Title No.715), cause of death - Consumption. He is stated to be a "friend" of the owner of the lair [his mother-in-law, his father-in-law John Connelly was buried in the same lair in 1869]. A fee of 9/- was charged.


1890 On Friday, July 18, Ellen Connolly or Dobbin, Widow, married William Reynolds, Widower at St. Paul's R.C. Church, Shettleston. [See Section RS-6-2 for further information.]

 


The Family of John Dobbin & Julia McGhee, 1906

John Dobbin was born on October 4, 1882 in Parkhead, Glasgow to Ellen Connolly (1854 - 1901) and Thomas Dobbin (c1854 - 1889), Mason (Journeyman). [See above for family background.]

Julia McGhee was born about 1886 in Bothwell Parish to Annie Woods (c1848 - ) and John McGhee, Coal Miner (c1850 - ).


1906 On Monday, April 30, John Dobbin and Julia McGhee were married at St. Francis Xavier's, Carfin after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.33 at Holytown on May 3.

John was a Bachelor, age 23, occupation Coalminer and usual residence 142 Omoa Square, Cleland. His parents are recorded as Thomas Dobbin, Stone Mason and Ellen Reynolds, previously Dobbin m.s. Connelly, both deceased.

Julia was a Spinster, gave her age as 20, occupation Domestic Servant and usual residence 12 Bell Row, Carfin. Her parents are recorded as John McGhee, Hostler and Annie McGhee, previously Owens m.s. Woods.

The celebrant was Charles Webb and the witnesses were William Mooney and Catherine McMurray.

John and Julia had the following children (that I know of) —

1906 Thomas Dobbin was born at 7h20m a.m. on Thursday, October 11 at 13 Bell Row, Carfin to Julia Dobbin m.s. Magee [sic] and John Dobbin, Coalminer who married on April 30, 1906 in the District of Holytown. His birth was registered No.586 at Holytown on October 17 by John Dobbin, Father, Present.


1908 John Dobbin was born at 3h a.m. on Tuesday, May 19 at Bell Row, Carfin to Julia Dobbin m.s. McGhee and John Dobbin, Coal Miner who married on April 30, 1906 in the District of Holytown. His birth was registered No.304 at Holytown on May 25 by John Dobbin, Father.


1910 William Dobbin was born at 10h a.m. on Wednesday, September 28 at 24 Bell Row, Carfin to Julia Dobbin m.s. McGhee and John Dobbin, Coalminer who married on April 30, 1906 in the District of Holytown. His birth was registered No.543 at Holytown on October 3 by John Dobbin, Father, Present.


1911 April 2 John and Julia were visiting Julia's parents at 12 Back Bell Row, Carfin, in a house with two windowed rooms.

1912 Annie Dobbin was born at 4h30m a.m. on Wednesday, February 14 at 12 Bell Row, Carfin to Julia Dobbin m.s. McGhee and John Dobbin, Coal Miner who married on April 30, 1906 in the District of Holytown. Her birth was registered No.123 at Holytown on March 6 by Julia Dobbin, Mother.


1914 James Dobbin was born at 5h50m a.m. on Friday, April 10 at 13 Bell Row, Carfin to Julia Dobbin m.s. McGhee and John Dobbin, Coal Miner who married on April 30, 1906 in the District of Holytown. His birth was registered No.225 at Holytown on April 20 by John Dobbin, Father, Present.


1915 Ellen Dobbin was born at 6h p.m. on Saturday, October 2 at 13 Bell Row, Carfin to Julia Dobbin m.s. McGhee and John Dobbin, Coal Miner who married on April 30, 1906 in the District of Holytown. Her birth was registered No.516 at Holytown on October 8 by John Dobbin, Father, Present.
