The Family of James Conray & ????, c1843

James Conray was born about 1824 in Ireland to Mary Lind ( - before 1864) and John Conray, Labourer ( - before 1864).

It appears that James married in Ireland and had children there before the family came to Scotland (not found in the 1851 census).

James appears to have had the following children (that I know of) in Ireland —

Margaretborn about 1845 in Ireland, last sighting 1861.
Maryborn about 1847 in Ireland, last sighting 1861.
Jamesborn about 1849 in Ireland, last sighting 1871.

He then married Margaret Lynch in 1853, she died in 1864 and he married Bridget Tunney later that same year and himself died before 1869. (In 1876, Bridget married James McHale who had previously been married to Margaret Colvin.)

[This Thomas Lynch may be the brother of Patrick (married to Ann McGee) and John (married to Mary Hally).]

The Family of James Conray & Bridget Tunney, 1864

Bridget Tunney was born about 1834 in Ireland to Bridget Graham ( - before 1864) and Michael Tunney ( - before 1864).

In the 1861 census, there is a Bridget Tinny, Cotton Bleacher, age 27, born Ireland, residing with brother Michael in Lightburn (622/3 Book 4 Page 8). Michael Tunny is still in Lightburn in 1871 (622/3 Book 4 Page 16).

1864 On Monday, June 6, James Conrey and Bridget Tunney were married at Eastmuir [St. Paul's] after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.25 at Shettleston on June 10.

James was a Widower, gave his age as 40, occupation Ridsman and usual residence Lightburn, Shettleston Parish. His parents are recorded as John Conrey, Labourer and Mary Conrey m.s. Linds, both deceased.

Bridget was a Spinster, gave her age as 30, occupation Out-Door Worker and usual residence Lightburn, Shettleston Parish. Her parents are recorded as Michael Tunney, Labourer and Bridget Tunney m.s. Graham, both deceased.

The celebrant was P McLaughlin, Pastor of St. Paul's Rom. Cath. Church, Eastmuir and the witnesses were Hugh Kelly and Mary Kelly.

James and Bridget had the following children (that I know of) —

Thomasborn in 1865 in Lightburn, Shettleston, last sighting 1891.
Bridgetborn in 1866 in Lightburn, Shettleston and died 1869.

1865 Thomas Conrey was born at 6h0m p.m. on Sunday, March 12 at Lightburn, Shettleston, Lanark to Bridget Conrey m.s. Tunny and James Conrey, Ridsman who married on June 6, 1864 at Eastmuir. His birth was registered No.57 at Shettleston on March 25 by Bridget Conrey, "her X mark", Mother.

1866 Bridget Conrey was born at 4h0m a.m. on Monday, December 31 at Lightburn, Shettleston, Lanark to Bridget Conrey m.s. Tunney and James Conrey, Ridsman who married on June 6, 1864 at Eastmuir. Her birth was registered No.4 at Shettleston on January 5 by James Conrey, "his X mark", Father.

Sadly, Bridget died in 1869 at the age of 2 years and 3 months

1867 James Conrey, Coal Miner, Married to Bridget Tuney, died at 7h30m a.m. on , May 2 at Royal Infirmary, Glasgow (Usual residence Par. of Shettleston), age 50 years, of Compound Fracture of Leg, as certified by R. Stewart, MD. His parents are recorded as James Conrey, Labourer and Margaret Conrey m.s. McGinnis. His death was registered No.769 at Glasgow [District of High Church] on May 4 by Thomas Lynch, Acquaintance.

James's parents recorded here do not match those recorded for his marriage to Bridget. I may go back and compare the records sometime, but probably not.

I strongly suspect that Thomas Lynch, Acquaintance is the Thomas Lynch who registered the death of James's second wife, Mary Lynch, declaring himself to be her cousin.

I wonder what caused his broken leg.

1869 Bridget Connray (Single) died at 3h0m p.m. on Sunday, April 11 at Lightburn, Shettleston, Lanark, age 2 years 3 months, of Diarrhoea after 5 months, as certified by Robert Carraway, Surgeon. Her parents are recorded as James Connray, Coal Miner (deceased) and Bridget Connray m.s. Tunney. Her death was registered No.62 at Shettleston on the following day by James Connray, half brother, Present.

1871 April 2 This appears to be Bridget, still in Lightburn, in a house with one windowed room.
