The Family of Patrick Cunningham & Catherine Dunigan, 1866

Patrick Cunningham was born in Ireland about 1833 to Bridget Queen (- before 1861) and John Cunningham (c1809 - ). [See Section CM-5-1 for family background.]

Catherine Dunigan was born in Shettleston about 1831 to Mary Smith (c1807 - 1897) and Henry Dunigan (c1801 - 1870). [See Section DG-5-2 for family background.]

1866 On Sunday, January 21, Patrick Cunningham and Catherine Dunigan were married at Eastmuir, Shettleston after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.4 at Shettleston on the following day.

Catherine was a Spinster, gave her age as 31 [I think 34 would have been more accurate], occupation Cotton Weaver and usual residence Shettleston, Lanark. Her parents are recorded as Henry Dunigan, Cotton Weaver and Mary Dunigan m.s. Smith.

Patrick was a Bachelor, gave his age as 32, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Sandyhills, Shettleston Parish, Lanark. His parents are recorded as John Cunningham, Coal Miner and Bridget Cunningham m.s. Queen (deceased).

The celebrant was P. McLaughlin, Pastor of St. Paul's Rom. Cath. Church, Eastmuir and the witnesses were Joseph Cunningham [Patrick's brother] and Margaret Dunigan [who themselves married in 1868]. The bride and groom made their marks, the witnesses apparently signed.

The marriage is also recorded in the register of St. Paul's, Eastmuir —

"Patrick Cunningham & Catherine Dunigan, after due proclamation of Banns, were married by me in the presence of Joseph Cunningham and Margaret Dunigan. Patrick McLaughlin."

1866 There is the baptism of Joseph Cunningham, lawful child of Patrick Cunningham and Cath Dunigan by Fr Patrick McLaughlin in the parish of St. Paul's, Eastmuir on November 25 with sponsor Margaret Dunigan, giving a birth date of Friday, November 16.

I could find no civil registration to match this event, nor could I find a death before a second Joseph was born.

1867 Joseph Cunningham was born at 3h30m a.m. on Monday, September 16 at Middlequarter, Shettleston, Lanark to Catherine Cunningham m.s. Dunigan and Patrick Cunningham, Coal Miner who married on January 21, 1866 at Eastmuir. His birth was registered No.248 at Shettleston on November 22 by Patrick Cunningham, "his X mark", Father.

I did not see a baptism to match this event.

This Joseph is probably the one who died in 1874 in Holytown, age 7.

1869 Henry Cunningham was born at 4h15m p.m. on Sunday, November 3 at Eastmuir, Shettleston, Lanark to Catherine Cunningham m.s. Dunigan and Patrick Cunningham, Coal Miner who married on January 21, 1866 at Eastmuir. His birth was registered No.194 at Shettleston on the following day by Patrick Cunningham, "his X mark", Father.

Henry died in 1874 in Holytown, age 5.

1871 April 2 The family have moved to Holytown where the address, as best I could make it out, appears to be 7 Black Ship Row, a house with one windowed room.
