The Family of Philip Leonard & Ellen, c1840

Philip Leonard was born about 1821 in Ireland.

Ellen was born about 1821 in Ireland.

c1840 Philip and Ellen were married in Ireland.

Philip and Ellen had the following children (that I know of) —

Jamesborn about 1841 in Ireland, last sighting 1871.
Charlesborn about 1845 in Ireland, last sighting 1861.
Mary Annborn about 1847 in Ireland, last sighting 1861.
Philipborn about 1849 in Ireland, last sighting 1861.
Bridgetborn about 1851 in Lanarkshire, last sighting 1871.
Catherineborn about 1855 in Lanarkshire, last sighting 1871.

1851 March 30 The family were living in Muirhead, Baillieston. (7 families share this address)

The Infant must be Bridget. I wonder where Charles and Mary Ann are. Possibly still in Ireland?

1861 April 7 The family were living at 7 Gray Street, Shotts Iron Works in a house with 2 windowed rooms (though that may include the kitchen).

NB. In noting the number of windowed rooms I have included kitchens, properly speaking, as rooms. To have done otherwise would have often given a House without a window, for many, even with Lodgers, occupy only a kitchen. If I am right, the instructions ought to have been more definite to have obviated dubiety, such as "Windowed apartments" or "Habitable windowed apartments". H. Brown.” [Enumerator]

I wonder if John Morris is related to the Mary Morris who married Charles or is he the brother of Mary Morris who married Philip and who appears in that household in 1871 having lost two years off his age.

1866 On Thursday, June 14, Charles Leonard and Mary Morris were married at Carluke [St. Athanasius] after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.21 at Carluke on the same day.

Charles was a Bachelor, gave his age as 21, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Shotts. His parents are recorded as Philip Leonard, Labourer and Helen Leonard m.s. Magurin.

Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 20, occupation Domestic Servant and usual residence also Shotts. Her parents are recorded as John Mathers [sic], Fire Clay Labourer and Margaret Mathers m.s. Hull.

The celebrant was Mortimer Cassin, C.C., Carluke and the witnesses were Michael Quigley and Ann Quigley.

All four parties made their marks.

1870 On Monday, May 23, Philip married Mary Morris at The Immaculate Conception, Bathgate. [See Section LE-6-3 for further information.]

It was not very considerate of Charles and Philip to both marry a Mary Morris, it caused me some confusion.

1871 April 2 The family were living at Old Calderhead near Shotts Iron Works, in a house with two windowed rooms.

Hmmm. I'm sure it's the right family but quite a few details are at odds with the 1861 census. Both James and Ellen are allegedly married in which case where are the wife and husband? No doubt it will all resolve itself in time.

No sign of Charles and Mary in Scotland.
