The Family of Andrew Higham & Sarah Frances McGee, 1903

Sarah Frances McGeeAugust 12, 1886 at 14 Small Street, Ardwick, Manchester to Margaret Hyslop (c1855 - 1891) and Thomas McGee (1846 - 1916). [See Section MG-6-1 for family background.]

Andrew Higham was born about 1885 in Gorton, Manchester, son of Thomas Higham (c1868 - ). His mother is as yet unidentified as she appears to have died before the family came within my ken, and Andrew's birth certificate is pretty low on my to-do list. For the time being, there is the death of a Louisa Alexandra Higham, aged 28, recorded in Chorlton (8c page 525) in the March quarter of 1889.

1881 There is a birth recorded of a Frederick Higham in the March quarter in Chorlton (8c page 716).

1885 There is a birth recorded of an Andrew Higham in the March quarter in Chorlton (8c page 733).

1890 There is a marriage recorded of Thomas Higham to Mary in the June quarter in Chorlton (8c page 1159).

1892 There is a birth recorded of a William Higham in the December quarter in Chorlton (8c page 817).

1901 March 31 This appears to be Andrew's family living at 30 Gomm Street, Longsight, Manchester. Gomm Street no longer exists, but from comparison with an old map, it would be approximately that part of Langport Avenue parallel to the Recreation Ground between the Stockport and Hyde roads west of the railway line.

Interesting set of ages here: I am inclined to infer that both Thomas and Mary R. have been married before and have merged two sets of children. If I get another freebie at English records, I might find two separate households - Higham and Pritchard - in 1891. For the moment, I'll assume that Mary R. is not Andrew's mother.

1903 Sarah Frances McGee married Andrew Higham on Saturday, October 24 in the Church of the Holy Name, Chorlton. The marriage was registered No.72 in the District of Chorlton in the Counties of Manchester and Lancaster.

Andrew was a Bachelor, aged 17, occupation Plumber (Journeyman) and usual residence 11 Harlow Street, West Gorton. His father is recorded as Thomas Higham, Plumber (Master).

Sarah Frances was a Spinster, also 17, no occupation recorded and usual residence 145 Cottenham Street, Chorlton upon Medlock. Her father is recorded as Thomas McGee, Calico printer's Engraver.

[It is clear on the certificate but I suspect Sarah's address may be wrong. In the 1901 census, the family were living at 45 Cottenham Street.]

The celebrant was Ronald Fraser and the witnesses Jas. McGee and Hannah Pritchard.

Sarah & Andrew had been married for 7 years and produced three children, all of whom were still alive.

I note that Sarah Frances has become Frances Sarah! I don't know what the significance of that might be.

1913 There is a birth recorded of a John F Higham in the March quarter in Chorlton (8c page 1551) with mother's surname McGee.

This may be the legendary Jack whom Sarah Frances took with her when she went off to London.

1915 There is a birth recorded of a Mary M M Higham in the December quarter in Chorlton (8c page 1264) with mother's surname McGee.
