The Family of Henry Dunigan & Mary Smith, c1830

Henry Dunigan was born about 1801 in Ireland to Elizabeth Marlie and Thomas Dunigan.

Mary Smith was born about 1807 in Glasgow to William Smith and Catherine Williamson.

c1829 I have not found a suitable marriage in the index for R.C. marriages or in the OPR.

Henry and Mary had the following children (that I know of), all born in Shettleston —

Catherineborn in 1830, married Patrick Cunningham in 1866 and died in 1904.
Thomas (1)born in 1832 and probably died before 1836
Elizabethborn in 1834, married John McNulty in 1862, last sighting 1901.
Thomas (2)born in 1836, married Elizabeth Kennedy in 1876, last sighting 1891.
Margaret (1)born in 1838 and probably died before April 1841.
Johnborn in 1840, last sighting 1841.
Bernardborn in 1843, married Margaret Gardner in 1869, last sighting 1911.
Margaret (2)born in 1845, married Joseph Cunningham in 1868 and died in 1883.
Maryborn in 1848 and probably died before April 1851.
Henryborn in 1851, married Elizabeth Houston in 1881, last sighting 1911.
James Smithborn in 1854, last sighting 1871.

Some entries from the Baptismal Register of St. Andrew's, Glasgow, the nearest Catholic church to Shettleston at that time —

1830Catherine, lawful daughter of Henry Dunigan and Mary Smith, born on [Monday,] the 28th ult [June], was baptised by me on the 4th July 1830. Sponsors were John McGee and Agnes Dunigan. Chas Grant.

1832Thomas, lawful son of Henry Donegan and Mary Smith, born on [Saturday,] the 8th Sept., 1832, was baptised by me on the 23rd Sept. 1832. Sponsors John Donegan and Elizabeth Donegan. William Gordon.

Since another Thomas was born in 1836, I think we can conclude that this Thomas died before May, 1836.

1834Elizabeth, lawful daughter of Henry Dunnigan and Mary Smith, born on [Thursday,] the 10th April, 1834, was baptised by me on the 20th April 1834. Sponsors John Dunnigan and Elizabeth Dunnigan. Chas Grant.

1836 Thomas Dunnigan was born on Sunday, 22 May to Henry Dunnigan & Mary Smith. He was baptised on July 17th in the parish of St. Andrew's, Glasgow by Fr. Charles Grant with sponsors Thomas Dunnigan & Agnes Dunnigan.

1838 Margaret Dunnigan was born on Tuesday, 25 September to Henry Dunnigan & Mary Smith. She was baptised on October 7th in the parish of St. Andrew's, Glasgow by Fr. Alexr McDonald with sponsors Bernard Dunnigan & Cath. Dunnigan.

Since this Margaret does not appear in the census for 1841 and another Margaret was born in 1845, I think we can conclude that this Margaret died before April 1841.

1840 John Dunnigan, was born on Thursday, May 28 to Henry Dunnigan & Mary Smith. He was baptised on June 7 in the parish of St. Andrew's, Glasgow by Fr. James O'Shea with sponsors John Dunnigan & Elizabeth Dunnigan.

1841 June 6 Henry and Mary were living in Shettleston within that part of the Parish of Shettleston bounded on the West by the Parliamentary Boundary of the City of Glasgow, on the North by Lightburn, on the South by the Edinburgh Road via Airdrie [now Shettleston Road I think] and on the East by the Old Cotton Work [and I'm not sure where this was]. [Note that in the 1841 Census only, relationships and marital staus are not recorded and the age of adults was rounded down to a multiple of five.]

The household is listed as -

Rel.Mar.AgeOccupationBirthplace
Henry Dunegan35H.L.W. Cot.born in Ireland
Mary23born in the County of Lanark
Catherine10born in the County of Lanark
Elisabeth5born in the County of Lanark
Thomas3born in the County of Lanark
John Dunegan1born in the County of Lanark

Methinks Mary's age should be 33 rather than 23.

1843 Bernard, lawful child of Henry Donegan and Mary Smyth was born on Sunday, January 8 and baptised on January 9 in the parish of St. Mary's, Abercromby Street by Fr. Hugh Quigly with sponsors Bernard Donegan and Betsy Donegan.

1845 Margaret, lawful child of Henry Donigan and Mary Smith was born on Thursday, April 17 and baptised on April 18 in the parish of St. Mary's, Abercromby Street by Fr. John McDermott with sponsors Bernard Donegan and Eliza Donegan.

1848 Mary, lawful child of Henry Dunigan and Mary Smith was born on Thursday, February 17 and baptised on February 18 in the parish of St. Mary's, Abercromby Street by Fr. William Lillis with sponsors Bernard Dunigan and Elizabeth Dunigan.

Mary does not appear with the family in the 1851 census so it looks as if she died young.

1851 Henry, lawful child of Henry Dunnigan and Mary Smith was born on Wednesday, January 22 and baptised on January 23 in the parish of St. Mary's, Abercromby Street by Fr. John Shaw with sponsors Bernard Dunnigan and Elizabeth Dunnigan.

1851 March 30 The family were living in the Cotton Land, Shettleston.

Henry has apparently aged 15 years since 1841. This would be reasonable if he was actually just short of 40 in that year allowing for his age being rounded down to 35. There is a Thomas with the same details recorded a few doors away as the son of John Dunigan. I suspect that this is a double listing.

1854 From the Register of Baptisms for St. Paul's, Eastmuir —

James Smith [two forenames], lawful child of Henry Dunigan and Mary Smith, mixed marriage, was born on Saturday, June 17 and baptised on June 18 by Fr. Patrick McLaughlin with sponsors Bernard Dunigan and Elizabeth Dunigan.

But which Bernard and Elizabeth Dunigan? Both names occur in a nearby household which I believe (though have no proof) to be related, and James's brother Bernard is a bit young for the role.

1861 April 7 In the Large Cotton Land, Shettleston, in a house with one windowed room, there dwelt

Again, Henry has apparently aged 15 years while only 10 years has passed for the rest of the world. However, at his death in 1869, his age is given as 64 so we can only assume that we don't know what age he was. John (age about 20) is missing but he reappears as a widower in 1881 so he isn't dead.

Elizabeth and John (McNulty) were also in the Large Cotton Land as were Margaret and Joseph (Cunningham). Bernard and Margaret (Gardner) were not far away in Green Row while Catherine and Patrick (Cunningham) had moved to Holytown.

1873 On Friday, October 17, Henry registered the death of his brother in law John McAnulty (husband of Elizabeth) who died two days earlier.
