The Family of James Hann & Mary Myers, 1894

James Hand was born about 1873, possibly in Co. Monaghan, mother as yet unidentified and father Patrick Hand, who was allegedy dead when James married in 1894.

Mary Myers was born about 1874, possibly in Co. Monaghan, mother as yet unidentified and father Richard Myers, Stonemason (c1840 - after 1906).

I saw no Myers baptisms in Monaghan (St. Macartan's) 1865 - 76.


1894 On Wednesday, June 20, James Hand and Mary Meyers were married at the Roman Catholic Chapel, Monaghan [St. Macartan's] according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.125 at Monaghan in the Union of Monaghan in the County of Monaghan on the following day.

James was a Bachelor, gave his age as 21, occupation Labourer and usual residence Carrickmacross. His father is recorded as Patrick Hand (dead).

Mary was a Spinster, gave her age as 20, no occupation recorded and usual residence Monaghan. Her father is recorded as Richard Meyers, Mason.

The celebrant was George McMeel and the witnesses were John McAleer and Mary Ward.

All parties signed their names.

James and Mary had the following children (that I know of), all born in Glasslough Street, Monaghan. —

Jamesborn in 1896, last sighting 1911.
Annieborn in 1899 and died in Glasgow in 1983
Maryborn in 1903 and died in Monaghan in 1905.
Margaretborn in 1906, married Robert James Maguire in Glasgow in 1926 and died in 1983.

which tallies with the 1911 census count.


1896 James Joseph Hand was born on Monday, March 30 at Glasslough St., Monaghan to Mary Hand formerly Myers and James Hand, Labourer. His birth was registered No.96 at Monaghan in the Union of Monaghan in the County of Monaghan on the following day by Mary Ann Tracy, Present at Birth, Glasslough St., Monaghan.


1899 Ann Jane Hand was born on Monday, March 20 at Glasslough Street to Mary Hand formerly Moyers and James Hand, Labourer. Her birth was registered No.53 at Monaghan in the Union of Monaghan in the County of Monaghan on April 3 by Richard Myers, "his X mark", Grandfather, Occupier, Glasslough St., Monaghan.


1901 March 31 Most of the family were living with Mary's father at Glasslough Street, Monaghan in a second class house with non-perishable walls and roof, 5 rooms with 2 windows at the front of the house.

I have so far been unable to find James in Monaghan. If we assume he is working away from home, it will take a lot of time to find him.


1903 Mary Frances Hand was born on Sunday, June 21 at Glasslough St. to Mary Hand formerly Myers and James Hand, Labourer. Her birth was registered No.181 at Monaghan in the Union of Monaghan in the County of Monaghan on August 31 by Mary Hand, Mother, Glasslough Street, Monaghan.

Sadly, Mary lived only 20 months.

1905 Mary Frances Hand died on Sunday, February 19 at Glasslough St. Monaghan of Marasmus [failure to thrive] after 2 months, Certified. She is recorded as being a Spinster, age 16 months, Child of Labourer. Her death was registered No.190 at Monaghan in the Union of Monaghan in the County of Monaghan on February 21 by Richard Mayers, "his X mark", Grandfather, Present at Death, Glasslough St, Monaghan.


1906 Margaret Hand was born on Friday, February 2 at Glasslough St. to Mary Hand formerly Myers and James Hand, Labourer. Her birth was registered No.66 at Monaghan in the Union of Monaghan in the County of Monaghan on April 19 by Richard Myers, "his X mark", Occupier, Glasslough St., Monaghan.


1911 April 2 The family had moved to Old Cross Square in the town of Monaghan and were living in a second class house with non-perishable walls and roof, 4 rooms and 3 windows at the front of the house. There were no outbuildings on the property.

James and Mary had been married for 17 years and produced 4 children of whom 3 were still living, the exception being Mary (1903 - 1905).

There is no sign of Richard Myers in this census, nor of his death in the Civil Registrations 1906 - 1911.

There are no births registered in Monaghan (registration district) for Hann or Hand 1911 - 1921.


1926 On Thursday, September 2, Margaret married Robert James Maguire in St. Mary's, Abercromby Street, Glasgow. [See Section MA-7-1 for further information.]


1983 Anne Hann (date of birth March 20, 1899), Calico Printer (retired), Single, died at 1515 hours on Saturday, February 26 at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow (usual address 109 Bluevale Street, Glasgow), age 83 years, of I(a) Severe biventricular failure, II Fractured neck right femur, as certified by Barbara McBride. Her parents are recorded as James Hann, Labourer and Mary Hann m.s. Myers, both deceased. Her death was registered No.167 at Martha Street, Glasgow [District 615] on March 2 by J. Maguire, Nephew, 416 Amulree Street, Glasgow.
