The Family of William Rogan & Sarah Colvin, 1888

William Rogan was born in Ireland about 1863 to Mary Docherty (c1840 - 1873) and William Rogan (c1837 - 1896). [See Section RG-6-1 for family background.]

Sarah Colvin was born in Lightburn, Shettleston on January 26, 1862 to Margaret McGee (1840 - 1905) and Daniel Colvin (1837 - 1917). [See Section CL-6-1 for family background.]


1888 On Monday, January 2, William Rogan and Sarah Colvin were married at St. Paul's R.C. Church, Shettleston after Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.10 at Shettleston on January 6th.

William was a Bachelor, gave his age as 24, occupation Coal Miner and usual residence Main Street, Tollcross. His parents are recorded as William Rogin, Iron Work Furnaceman and Mary Ann Rogin m.s. Goodwin. [Mary Ann was his stepmother, his own mother was Mary Docherty who died in 1873.]

Sarah was a Spinster, gave her age as 24 [she was three weeks short of her 26th birthday], occupation Power Loom Weaver and usual residence Lightburn. Her parents are recorded as Daniel Colvin, Road Surfaceman and Margaret Colvin m.s. McGhie.

The celebrant was Fr. Joseph Van Hecke and the witnesses were Henry Lynch [possibly Sarah's cousin] and Cecilia Colvin [probably Sarah's sister].

They had the following children, all born in Tollcross except William —

Jamesborn in 1888 and died the following year.
Williamborn in Lightburn in 1890, went to America in 1923, last sighting 1927.
Margaret (Maggie)born in 1891 and died in 1943.
Mary (Polly)born in 1893, married Tommy McNamara in 1926 and died in 1930.
Cecilia (Cissie)born in 1895, went to America in 1928 and died in 1961.
Sarahborn in 1897 and died in 1925.
Danielborn in 1898, married Jean Docherty in 1931 and died in 1958.
Johnborn in 1901, became a priest and died in 1940.


1888 James Rogan was born at 1h15m p.m. on Tuesday, November 6 at Fullarton Place, Tollcross to Sarah Rogin [sic] m.s. Colvin and William Rogin, Coalminer who married on January 2, 1888 at Shettleston. His birth was registered No.357 at Baillieston in the District of Old Monkland West on November 13 by William Rogin, Father.

1889 James Rogan, Single, died at 11h40m a.m. on Friday, May 31, aged 7 months, at Tollcross of Meningitis after 14 days as certified by Alexander Scott, MD, Tollcross. His parents are recorded as William Rogan, Coalminer and Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin. His death was registered No.83 at Baillieston on the same day by William Rogin, Father.

There is an entry in the records for St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth for June 1 for the burial of James Rogan, aged 7 months, in Lair 221, Section 8E (Title No.1390). Cause of death is given as Water on Head and James is stated to be the son of the lair owner. A fee of 8/- was paid. The same lair was used in 1896 for the burial of James's grandfather, William Rogan.


1890 William Rogan was born at 9.40m p.m. on Friday, April 4 at Lightburn to Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin and William Rogan, Coal Miner who married on January 1 [sic], 1888 at Shettleston. His birth was registered No.112 Shettleston on April 9 by William Rogin, Father, Fullarton Place, Tollcross.

He went to America in 1923, returned briefly to Scotland in 1927 and subsequently, in America, married Mary and they had a daughter Mary Theresa. (see photos)


1891 I have not found William and Sarah in the 1891 Census in Scotland.


1891 Margaret McGhee Rogin (Maggie) was born at 3h0m p.m. on Wednesday, September 9 at Dunlop [now Corbett] Street, Tollcross to Sarah Rogin m.s. Colvin and William Rogin, Coal Miner who married on January 2, 1888. Her birth was registered No.331 at Shettleston on September 15 by William Rogin, Father.

Maggie died in 1943 aged 52.


1893 Mary Rogan (Polly) was born at 7h0m p.m. on Saturday, October 28 at Dunlop Street, Tollcross to Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin and William Rogan, Coal Miner who married on January 2, 1888. Her birth was registered No.450 at Shettleston on November 2 by William Rogan, Father.

Mary married Tommy McNamara in 1926.


1895 Cecilia Rogan (Cissie) was born at 10h0m p.m. on Friday, July 12 at 49 Dunlop Street, Tollcross to Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin and William Rogan, Coal Miner who married at Shettleston on on January 2, 1888. Her birth was registered No.267 at Shettleston on July 3 by William Rogan, Father.

Cissie emigrated to the United States in 1928, returned briefly in 1933 and died in 1961 in New York aged 65.


1897 Sarah Rogan was born at 4h0m a.m. on Thursday, March 18 at 50 Easterhill Street, Tollcross to Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin and William Rogan, Blast Furnaceman who married on January 1 [sic], 1888. Her birth was registered No.138 at Shettleston on March 25 by William Rogan, Father.

There is an annotation on her birth certificate in another hand: "This child was baptised by me at St. Joseph's Tollcross 20? - III - 97. James H. ?Kirk. Wm. Hendry & Cecile Colvin Godparents?".

[Sarah Colvin had a great-grandmother Margaret Hendry and one of her sisters was named Margaret Hendry Colvin.]

Sarah died in 1925, aged 28.


1898 Daniel Colvin Rogan (Dan) was born at 10h0m a.m. on Wednesday, December 7 at 50 Easterhill Street, Tollcross to Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin and William Rogan, Blast Furnaceman who married on January 1 [sic], 1888. His birth was registered No.584 at Shettleston on December 12 by William Rogan, Father.

Dan married Jean Docherty in 1931.


1901 March 31 The address on the census entry is 50, 52 Easterhill Street. This is the only reference to 50 but there are seven other houses sharing 52. The house had two windowed rooms.

1901 John Rogan was born at 11h0m p.m. on Sunday, November 24 at 50 Easterhill Street, Tollcross to Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin and William Rogan, Blast Furnaceman who married on January 1 [sic], 1888 in Shettleston. His birth was registered No. 741 at Shettleston on November 29 by William Rogan, Father.

John went on to become a priest and died in 1940 aged 39.


1911 April 2 The family were living at 107 Causewayside Street in a house with 2 windowed rooms. There were at least 3 other families on that stair.

William and Sarah had been married for 23 years and produced 8 children of whom 7 were still living, the exception being James (1888 - 1889).

Annie [Colvin] Mullen and family were living up the next close (105).


At some point, the family took in Mary Wood Colvin who was born on March 5, 1909 at 297 Main Street, Shettleston to Jane MacNee and Sarah's brother, James Colvin. [See CL-6-1 for family information] The Wood comes from Jane's mother's maiden surname.

At some point, the family moved to 97 Causewayside Street, Tollcross.

1918 The Rogans took in Rosa McGee, daughter of Sarah Colvin's cousin James McGee. [See MG-7-1 for family information] Rosa's mother died a few months after Rosa was born on September 22, 1917 and James decided, reluctantly, that the baby was too much for her 13 year old sister Margaret to cope with in addition to the 6 other younger children. The arrangement was meant to be temporary but Rosa remained with the Rogans until Maggie died in 1943.


1922 Sarah Rogan, Married to William Rogan, Furnaceman, died at 10h30m a.m. on Saturday, September 2 at 97 Causewayside Street, Tollcross, age 59 years [she was 60], of Asthma, 2 months, Cardiac Exhaustion, 1 day, as certified by G.J. Bastible, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as Daniel Colvin, Road Surfaceman and Margaret Colvin m.s. McGhee, both deceased. Her death was registered No.107 at Baillieston on September 4 by Wm. Rogan, Widower, Present.

There is an entry in the records for St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth on September 5 for the burial of Sarah Rogan of Tollcross, aged 59, in Lair 180, Section 14W (Title No.8491) at a depth of 8ft [usually noted only for the first burial in a lair]. She is stated to be the wife of the owner of the lair. A fee of £2-10/- was charged [for the burial, not for the lair].


1923 William emigrated to the United States.


1925 Sarah Rogan, (Single), died at 11h0m a.m. on Sunday, November 1 at 97 Causewayside Street, Tollcross, age 27 years [she was 28], of Anaemia, Embolism of Cort as certified by M. Bastible, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as William Rogan, Night Watchman and Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin (deceased). Her death was registered No.107 at Baillieston on the following day by William Rogan, Father.

There is an entry in the records for St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth on November 4 for the burial of Sarah Rogan of 97 Causewayside St., aged 28, in Lair 180, Section 14W (Title No.8491). She is stated to be the daughter of the owner of the lair. A fee of £2 was charged.


1926 On Wednesday, August 4, Mary Agnes Rogan (Polly) and Thomas McNamara were married at St. Joseph's, Roman Catholic Church, Tollcross after Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.65 at Baillieston (District of Old Monkland West) on August 7.

Thomas was a Bachelor, gave his age as 32, occupation Cinema Operator and usual residence 34 Park Street, Cambuslang. His parents are recorded as Michael McNamara, Coal Miner (deceased) and Catherine McNamara m.s. Cougans.

Mary Agnes [I don't know when the Agnes appeared] was a Spinster, gave her age as 31 [she was 32], occupation Handloom Weaver and usual residence 96 [sic] Causewayside Street, Tollcross. Her parents are recorded as William Rogan, Furnaceman and Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin (deceased).

The celebrant was Daniel Colvin, Catholic Clergyman [and uncle of the bride], All Saints Church, Coatdyke, Airdrie and the witnesses were Samuel McNamara, 34 Park Street, Cambuslang and Cecilia Rogan, 97 Causewayside Street, Tollcross.


1928 Sarah Philomena Colvin McNamara was born at 6h25m a.m. on August 29 at 5 Park Street, Cambuslang to Thomas McNamara, Cinema Operator and Mary Agnes McNamara m.s. Rogan who married on August 4, 1926 in the Western District of Old Monkland. Her birth was registered No.430 at Cambuslang on August 31.


1930 Mary McNamara (married to Thomas McNamara, Cinema Operator) died at 0h40m p.m. on Wednesday, May 14 at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow (usual residence 5 Park Street, Cambuslang), age 35 years, of Valvular disease of the heart after 3 years, as certified by David Ross, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as William Rogan, Ironwork Labourer and Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin (deceased). Her death was registered No.859 at Glasgow [Dennistoun District] on the following day by Thos. McNamara, Widower.

Mary McNamara, age 35, place of death R.I., was buried on the 16th in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth. She is stated to be the Wife of the owner of the lair, 1356, section 13W, with title number 10527. A fee of £2-15/- was paid.


1940 Sarah Philomena Colvin McNamara (Single) died at 5h20m p.m. on Friday, October 25 at the County Hospital, Cleland (usual residence 8 Clydeford Road, Cambuslang), age 12 years, of a) Rheumatic Fever b) Endocarditis c) Acute dilatation of heart, as certified by R.B. Bell, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as Thomas McNamara, Cinema Operator and Mary McNamara m.s. Rogan (deceased). Her death was registered No.99 at Cleland on the following day by Thos. McNamara, Father, 8 Clydeford Road, Cambuslang.

Sarah Philomena Colvin O'Namara, age 18, place of death County Hosp., Cleland, was buried on the 28th with her mother in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth having died at the County Hosp., Cleland. A fee of £2-15/- was paid. She is stated to be the daughter of the owner.


1951 Thomas McNamara, Cinema Operator, Married to 1st Mary Agnes Colvin Rogan, 2nd Catherine O'Brien or Ranachan, died at 2h45m a.m. on Friday, December 21 at 209 Maryhill Road, Glasgow, age 57 years, of Bronchitis, Myocarditis, Cardiac Failure as certified by D. Sweeney, L.R.C.P.+S. His parents are recorded as Michael McNamara, Coal Miner and Catherine McNamara m.s. Cougans, both deceased. His death was registered No.493 at Glasgow [District of Maryhill] on the same day by Patrick Ranachan, Step-son, Present.

Thomas McNamara, age 58, place of death 209 Maryhill Road, was buried on the 22nd with Mary and Sarah in St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth. He is stated to be the owner of the lair, title 10527, lair 1356, section 13W. A fee of £3-4/- was paid.


1927 On Saturday, August 27, William Rogan sailed on the Caledonia from Glasgow, arriving in New York on Sunday, September 4. On the ship's manifest, he is listed as age 34 [he was 37], single, occupation Mechanic and nearest living relative in Scotland, his father, William Rogan of 97 Causewayside St., Tollcross, Glasgow. He was travelling on visa 244408 issued at Washington on March 30, 1927. His last permanent residence was New York, USA and was returning to 679 Gates Ave., Brooklyn, New York. He had paid his own fare, was carrying $100 and had previously been in New York from 1923 - 1927. He is described as being 5'3", fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes and no deformity or distinguishing marks.

1928 On Wednesday, June 20, Cecilia Rogan sailed on the Cameronia from Glasgow, arriving in New York on Thursday, June 28. On the ship's manifest, she is listed as age 32 [correct], single, occupation Domestic and nearest living relative in Scotland, her father, William Rogan of 97 Causewayside St., Tollcross, Glasgow. She was travelling on visa 18776 issued at Glasgow on April 9, 1928. Her destination was the home of an aunt Mrs Ellen Kenny, 522 E.139th St., Bronx, New York and intended to stay permanently in the US. She had paid her own fare and was carrying $50. She is described as being 4'5", fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes and no deformity or distinguishing marks.


1931 On Wednesday, August 26, Daniel Rogan married Jane Docherty (Jean) at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Glasgow after Banns and Publication according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was registered No.106 at Glasgow (District of Maryhill) on August 31.

Daniel was a bachelor, aged 32, occupation Blast Furnaceman and usual residence 97 Causewayside Street, Tollcross. His parents are recorded as William Rogan, Blast Furnaceman and Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin (deceased).

Jane was a Spinster, gave her age as 27, occupation Rubber Bottle Maker and usual residence 1807 Maryhill Road, Glasgow. Her parents are recorded as Bernard Docherty, Iron Stone Miner and Sarah Docherty m.s. Holmes. [See Section DC-7-1 for family background.]

The celebrant was John Rogan, Catholic Clergyman (and brother of the groom), St. Peter's Church, Glasgow and the witnesses were Daniel Mullen, 107 Causewayside Street, Tollcross and Mary Colvin, 97 Causewayside Street, Tollcross (cousins of the groom).

Dan and Jean lived at some time at 1799 Maryhill Road and moved to Balornock in the 1950s. They had 6 children, William, Bernard, John, Daniel, Sadie and James. Dan died on April 12, 1958 and Jean on January 6, 1986


1933 On Friday, September 29, Cecilia Rogan sailed on the Cameronia from Glasgow, arriving in New York on Monday, October 9. On the ship's manifest, she is listed as age 38 [correct], single, occupation Domestic and nearest living relative in Scotland, her father, William Rogan of 97 Causewayside St., Tollcross, Glasgow. She was travelling on visa 915070 issued at (919690) Wash. on May 25, 1933. She had been in the USA from 1928 to 1933 and had departed on July 1 1933. Her last permanent residence was Forest Hills, USA and she was returning to the home of her employer Mrs Irene Hawkins, 205 Puritan Ave., Forest Hills, New York . She had paid her own fare and was carrying $100. She is described as being 4'5", fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes and no deformity or distinguishing marks.


1934 or thereabouts. The remaining Rogans moved from Causewayside Street to a new council house at 36 Amulree Place, Sandyhills.


1936 William Rogan, Blast Furnace Man, Widower of Sarah Colvin, died at 2h55m p.m. on Friday, January 31 at 36 Amulree Place, Glasgow, aged 72 of Acute Broncho pneumonia after 4 days as certified by Michael J Flaherty, M.B.B.Ch. His parents are recorded as William Rogan, Furnaceman and Mary Ann Rogan m.s Goodwin, both deceased. His death was registered No.123 at Glasgow (District of Shettleston) on the following day by Daniel Rogan, Son (Present), 1799 Maryhill Road, Glasgow.

There is an entry in the records for St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth on February 3 for the burial of William Rogan of 36 Amulree Place, aged 73, in Lair 180, Section 14W (Title No.8491). He is stated to be the owner of the lair. A fee of £1-19/- was charged.


1940 John Joseph Rogan, Roman Catholic Clergyman, Single died at 10h20m p.m. on Monday, December 30 at 28 Weir Street, Coatbridge aged 38 [sic] years of Heart Failure, Acute Bronchitis as certified by J.A.Sweeney, M.B. His parents are recorded as William Rogan, Blast Furnaceman and Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin, both deceased. His death was registered No.571 at Coatbridge (District of Old Monkland) on the following day by Daniel Colvin, Uncle, Present.

John was at that time, a curate at St. Patrick's, Coatbridge where his uncle Canon Daniel Colvin was parish priest

He does not feature in Dalbeth records.


1943 Margaret McGhee Rogan, Single, died at 2h55m p.m. on Sunday, October 10 at 36 Amulree Place, Glasgow aged 52 years, of Cerebral Haemorrhage, 1 day, as certified by J.H.Murray, M.B.Ch.B. Her parents are recorded as William Rogan, Blast Furnaceman and Sarah Rogan m.s. Colvin, both deceased. Her death was registered No.600 at Glasgow (District of Shettleston) on the following day by Daniel Colvin Rogan, Brother, 1799 Maryhill Road, Glasgow.

There is an entry in the records for St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth on October 13 for the burial of Margaret McGhie Rogan of 36 Amulree St., aged 53, in Lair 180, Section 14W (Title No.8491). She is stated to be the daughter of the owner of the lair. A fee of £1-19/- was charged.


1961 Cissie Rogan died in New York on Wednesday, February 15, aged 65.
